COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN !!! WELL THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT NEW MEXICO HASN'T GOT A LOT GOING FOR IT-INCLUDING ANY REMOTE CHANCE OF AN INTERNET CONNECTION,SO THE BLOG GOT LOST IN THE WILDERNESS SOMEWHERE DOWN THE ROAD,ANYWAYS HERE GOES WITH CATCH UP...THE JOURNEY CONTINUED FROM THE LAST REPORT THROUGH OKLAHOMA(131) ON WHAT WOULD END UP BEING A 300 MILE PLUS TREK(AND THATS JUST THE FIRST DAY)ALONG CAME A NUMBER OF 'STOP THE CAR' SCENARIOS..FIRST UP WAS LUCILLE'S OLD PORCH GAS STATION(132)IN HYDRO-THE LAST ONE ON THE ROAD,IN ELK CITY THERE WAS THE OLD TOWN MUSEUM(133)(134)(135)(136),THEN CAME A CRAZY LOOKING CURIOUSITY SHOP (137) IN ERICK..THEN,BEFORE WE KNEW IT WE WERE OUT OF OKLAHOMA AND ON TO THE 158 MILE STRETCH WHERE TEXAS GETS INVOLVED WITH ROUTE 66,FIRST UP WAS THE TOWN OF SHAMROCK WHERE YOU FIND THE 'DROP IN CAFE'(138),THATS FOLLOWED BY THE BARBED WIRE MUSEUM(139)IN MCLEAN-HARD TO GET EXCITED ABOUT A BUNCH OF BARBED WIRE,BUT THE GUEST BOOK SHOWED THAT THEY WERE COMING HERE FROM ALL OVER THE PLACE...ALSO IN TOWN WAS THE OLD PHILLIPS GAS STATION(140).WE THEN CROSSED THROUGH AMARILLO (SHOW ME THE WAY TO....)AND AGAIN NEGOTIATED THE BUSY FREEWAY TRAFFIC AND CAME TO ONE OF THE MOST PHOTOGRAPHED SITES ALONG THE ROAD-THAT BEING 'CADILLAC RANCH' (MAIN PIC.)(141)(142)WHERE THE CARS ARE BURIED HEAD FIRST INTO THE GROUND AND VISITORS ARE INVITED TO SPRAY GRAFFITI ON TO THEM....NEXT CAME A SUPPOSEDLY ICON ROAD SIGHT-A LEANING WATER TOWER(143)(WOW) THEN IT HAPPENED ALONG THE ROAD WE SAW IT LIKE A MIRAGE, THE TOWN CALLED 'ADRIAN' WHICH CLAIMS TO BE THE HALF WAY POINT OF ROUTE 66(144)-1139 MILES TO L.A. AND 1139 TRAVELLED FROM CHICAGO-ALL THAT DRIVING WITHIN A WEEK-!! HELP..THERES A CAFE AT THE MID POINT LOCATION(145)(146),BUT NO MOTEL WHICH WE WERE HOPING FOR(THERE WAS A MOTEL THERE -BUT CLOSED DOWN-WE WERE ADVISED IT HAD BEEN CLOSED DOWN FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS..).LACK OF MOTELS OR FINDING SUITABLE ACCOMMODATION WOULD SOON TO BECOME A NIGHTMARE..FINAL STOP ON THE TEXAS ROUTE WAS THE GHOST TOWN OF GLEN RIO(147)(148)(149) THIS PLACE MORE THAN ANYWHERE BROUGHT INTO FOCUS THE FATE THAT HAS BEEN DEALT TO THIS OLD ROAD..THERE IS ONE OLD LADY THAT STILL LIVES IN ONE OF THOSE BUILDINGS AT GLEN RIO,THEY SET IT UP FOR BILLY CONNOLLY TO INTERVIEW HER ON HIS TRIP,APPARENTLY SHE HAS TO TRAVEL 60 MILES FOR A PINT OF MILK-THINK I'D TRY TO GET USED TO TAKING IT WITHOUT!!!SO WE CROSSED INTO NEW MEXICO AND THIS IS WHERE THE FUN STARTS,ALL OF A SUDDEN SOMEONES TURNED THE LIGHTS OUT,ALL THE LITTLE TOWNS ARE REPLACED WITH VAST STRETCHES OF BARREN PRAIRE,THE OLD DINERS AND SIGHTS OF INTEREST, NO LONGER COME INTO VIEW AND WERE INSTEAD REPLACED, BY THE SCATTERED TRAILERS AND SHACKS OF THE NAVAJO INDIANS,BY THIS TIME WE ARE READY TO STOP FOR THE NIGHT...BUT WHERE!!!! WE FOUND A PLACE AT TUCUMCARI-FIRST SIGN THAT THE INTERNET CONNECTION AROUND HERE WAS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WE DID A FIND A VERY INERESTING BAR THOUGH WHERE EVERYTHING WASN'T QUITE AS IT SEEMED,THERE'S NO REAL PEOPLE IN THERE,JUST PAINTINGS OF CUSTOMERS ON THE WALLS(150)(151)(152) IS THAT BOB IN THERE?..,ALWAYS THOUGHT HE WASN'T FOR REAL...NEXT MORNING WE SET OFF AGAIN ON ANOTHER MAMMOTH DRIVE ACROSS NEW MEXICO-SCENERY DID'NT IMPROVE ANY,WE CROSSED ALBERQUERQUE-MASSIVE LOAD OF CARS,STRUGGLED TO FIND A PLACE TO STAY BUT FINALLY GOT INTO A BIT OF A DIVE IN GALLUP-AGAIN NO INTERNET-TOLD IT WAS THERE -IT JUST DIDN'T HAPPEN...SO NOW WE ARE UP TO DATE,GALLUP IS CLOSE TO THE ARIZONA BORDER SO THATS COMING UP NEXT,I 'M HOPING THINGS IMPROVE-I WONT MISS NEW MEXICO THATS FOR SURE..
