We travelled down from Granada to Isla de Ometepe on the 2nd of September. Isla de Ometepe is situated in Lake Nicaragua, which we had previously seen in Granada. We were able to catch a bus directly from Granada to the Rivas, at Rivas we took a taxi to the port as we were in danger of missing our boat. The bus we took from Granada to Rivas was an old American yellow school bus which they call chicken buses over here due to the liberal nature of what is allowed to be carried on board. Once at the port we quickly got our tickets and boarded the boat for the 1 hour ride over to Ometepe. The boat was comfortable enough and we were treated to the first half of Mission Impossible on the way. On arrival at Ometepe we boarded another school bus for the journey to Santo Domingo, the area on the Island we decided to stay. The journey which we expected would take an hour and a half took an awful lot longer and I unfortunately chose the seats over the wheel arch when boarding. We spent over two hours with our chins on our knees waiting for Santo Domingo to come in to sight. Santo Domingo is a small area with only a small spattering of beach restaurants and accommodation options. We chose our accommodation from the trusty Lonely Planet and settled in at Buenos Vista. Santo Domingo is situated on the waist of the island between the two volcanoes which make up Isla de Ometepe. One of these volcanoes is still considered active and last erupted in 1957. On the evening of arrival we headed out for a bite to eat and then chatted away for much of the evening as we sat on the hammock seats outside of our room. We went to bed at a fairly reasonable time with plans to relax the next day. Relax is exactly what we did. We found some hammocks closer to the beach with plans of reading for the morning then heading on a small hike in the afternoon to a water hole. At 4pm we were still swinging merrily away in our hammocks having only ventured as far as the restaurant for some lunch. We had a chance to discuss our options and decided to leave the following day for San Juan del Sur having felt we had done as much lazing around as we could justify. A little later that evening Sue and I sat outside for one of our card sessions. As we were playing a group of people arrived who were staying in the hostel. We got chatting to some of them, two Aussie guys, a Canadian girl and a Czech guy as well. They joined our card game and it was with them that we decided to go for dinner that evening. Matty, Tristan, Kim, Vlad, Sue and I sat and drank and played cards most of the evening. At around 11pm the guys started to become a little merry. Unfortunately for me someone said something particularly amusing so I threw my head back in rapturous laughter. As I threw my head back my body followed suit, this was also follow by the breaking of a plastic chair leg and the back of the seat as the seat I was sat on was reduced to rubble. We all thought this was rather hilarious and bemoaned the poor quality of chair, unfortunately one of the staff members wasn't so amused and stormed through the communal area switching off all the lights so we were sat in total darkness. Still, we finished our hand of cards before hitting the water for a midnight swim. The following morning Sue and I decided that we would stay another night regardless of following days plan to leave. Thankfully we made it to the water hole where we spent a fair few hours swimming in the natural water whilst being brought beers to the water's edge by a waiter (it isn't all roughing it!!!) The evening followed a similar pattern as we went out for dinner followed by a few drinks before again having another midnight swim. The next morning we were all leaving together so we booked a minibus taxi for us all to share to the port. Before we could leave we had to settle our bill. We had three nights' accommodation, a few beers and an unexplained $15 charge on our bills. It was unexplained until the owner did a rather accurate impression of a drunken person breaking a chair - the cheek of it. Having settled up we hopped in the cab for a ride to the port before our journey across land to San Juan Del Sur. The boat showed an hour's worth of Latino ballad music videos. I was expecting the second half of Mission Impossible. Back on the mainland we had to say our goodbyes before heading off in a taxi for a 1 hour journey to San Juan Del Sur on the pacific coast.
