So, we arrived from the night train (where I had frozen to death from the air-con) and found a hotel with a nice clean and spacious room! After a well needed shower I explored the Citadel, a place where the emporers used to live (a city within a city) including the Imperial Inclosure and the FOrbidden Purple City - amazing buildings and detail on these. I met with Thomas for dinner who had heard from the boys who had in fact made it here. He suggested hiring bikes and going exploring the next day. A good idea I thought, until I realised he meant motorbikes and not pushbikes :(
So, an early start and we picked up our bike and met the boys (I decided that there was no chance I was driving in this crazy highway code-less place, so I was on the back) Mission: Find tombs. After heading in the right directions we had ran out of map and still no tombs (I was designated navigator) Finally we spied something that resembled a tomb on a hill, so do our best to navigat to it. When we arrive it is in fact a tomb, but on consultation with the trustie guidebook, it is not recommended. We get back on the bikes and finally find the tomb of Minh Mang. This was a massive area of land, with buildings originally built in symmatry, but has since been bombed etc. Some very impressive buildings, but there didn't appear to be any physical tomb of the guy!? (apparently they don't bury them here, it's just esigned by them!?!) We were too hot and bothered so decided to head for the beach. Unfortunately, during my switch-over between bikes I caught my leg on the exhaust, burning it, gaining my Vietnamese Tatoo :( The drive to the beach was awesome, getting out of the city and driving past rice fields, then piles of rice drying on the street. When we arrived at the beach we were clealy the honey as we were swarmed on. 8 people sat and watched us sun-bathe in antipaction that we might get hungry or thristy. A bit of sun, wind and rain and it was time to head back. Met up for a drink in possibly the coldest bar I've ever been in - I could no longer drink my drink, and found it warmer to stand outside and watch the torrential down-pour. On the realisation that the rain was not going to stop I cut my losses and ran home, getting soaked through to my pants! All-in-all a brill day!
