Bula! from Fiji,
Since my arrival 3 days ago I have certainly adopted 'fiji time' mentallity!!
I experienced my first Kava welcome ceremony yesterday! I had to sit cross legged on the floor with Baba and his sister where he made up the Kava while telling me stories of his village and surrounding Islands I should visit.
I had to shout 'Bula' and clap my hands once then down the kava in one, then clap three times saying 'Vinaka' (thank you)! I quite enjoyed the story telling and ceremonial process but not so sure about the Kava!
After the 'ceremony' I had a wandered round the markets trying to take it all in. I didn't really get a minutes peace though as I was being constantly invited/hassled to this shop or that shop by the locals and even invited to go for beer - I politely declined!!
By the time I'd reached the temple at the bottom of the main street I'd had enough, so got a taxi back to my hotel for some relaxation time by the pool. It turned out to be a good night - by complete chance I bumped into Steve and Vanessa (the couple i met in Alice Springs) so we drank cocktails and exchanged travel stories while they were waiting to catch their flight home.
I had an early start this morning, I arranged a day trip to South Sea Island - This is the Fiji you dream about (paradise)!! We were welcomed to the island with singing (photo above). Once they're I took a submarine trip around the surrounding reef then went on a snorkelling tour. The view was spectacular, but I found out I have real psychological issues with breathing while under water!! Think I snorkelled properly for about 5 minutes out of 30 but at least I gave it my best shot!!! After the snorkelling I had a well earned break in my own little hammock on the Island - bliss!! We had an amazing barbeque lunch then did a tour of some of the other surrounding Islands - Beachcomber, Mana, Castaway, Bounty and many more each one more stunning than the last!!!
I am planning to chill by the pool for the next couple of days as I've heard how miserable it is at home - want to make the most of it before heading to Hong Kong on Saturday (for 3 nights) then I'll be back to reality a week today!! Can't believe it!
