We arrived into Lima late afternoon, after a lenghty but scenic drive along the Pan American Highway which clings to the Pacific coastline. We did the usual check in, did some bookeeping and paperwork to ensure everything was in order for the next leg of our trip, and met up with everyone for a farewell dinner. Lima is a massive city, which suffers from all the problems of big cities. We spent the evening at a restaurant perched on a cilff overlooking the sea. It was a brilliant location and setting for the end of a fantastic 3 months. Despite being a wednesday night we were all intent on sampling the Lima nightlife. There wasn't much happening but we certainly made a night of it. The next morning, hung over and probably not thinking entirely straight, I awoke extra early to get my dose of History! Lima formed the headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition in the Americas. There was a museum in downtown lima that was highly reccomended. So I got in a taxi, sat through rush hour (I only had a limited period of time as I had to be back at the hotel to check out at 11). After about a half hour travelling throught the smog and trafic filled streets I was dropped at the museum. In my eagerness to attend the museum I had forgotten to email and check if they had any English material! No! Everything was in Spanish, and unwilling to turn around I embarked on a spanish tour! I understood nothing, and it was without doubt the greatest waste of 3 hours I have ever spent. I returned to the hotel in time to check out. That afternoon we spent the best part of 3 hours at the post office attempting to send things home. Apparently they did arrive safely. One final farewell and we left for the airport.......
I will finish this when I have slightly more time and hopefully include a thoughtful summary of my last 3 months in South America, a continent that has absolutely enthralled me. If your lucky, I may include some trademark descriptions of lush greenery!
