First of all ive really annoyed that no computer has a disc drive to put my photos on but they will be on as soon as i can!! ive got so many greats 1s...Now all the way back to bangkok i got my flight to phom phen in cambodia at 3.10 but it was delayed not happy!!!
Phom Phen
Arrive In Phom Phen around 6pm after the long delay but it was fine my plane was so budget i thought they wound it up to start... i got off the plane and went to the visa check in and realised i had dropped my wallet! I was petrafied all my money was in there plus i had no phone as my thai sim card wasn't working so i run back on to the plane i just left, luckily it was under the seat... it was like something out of a movie everyone somehow knew i had lost it and started clapping as i left the plane! not the best of starts in cmabodia!
after getting my $20 visa i proceded to get a cab to the guest house to meet the girls (perrine and pheobe) my first guest house and flashpacking with joey and co.
i was pleasently surprised there was nothing wrong with the place very clean and very cheap $7 between the 3 for a night how can you complain...we went straight out for dinner as the girls had been waiting for me all day. My first experience with cambodian food and it is amazing fish amoc is their specialality and it is so nice like a mild fish curry they also have fresh spring rolls and lots of egg plant which aswell is lovely! the food i wasn't keen on trying was the fried bugs and birds all over the street are sellers.
they sell spiders, cockroaches, crickets etc and these little birds all deep friend not to appealing! everywhere you walking along the mekong are beggers either selling something or not mostly little children which is a shame as they are exploited sometimes the girls give in and buy a book or a braclet but not much else for the beggers i would rather give them food than money. we go to the night market and see the amazing hand crafted things the people make from braclets to chairs to statues to paintings they make everything by hand! we have a early night as we are going to see then killing fields of pol pot and to an orphanage.
The killing fields are a chilling experince why they want to make a shrine of skulls of there darkest times is beyond me!? but all the same i think it is something you have to see it. after the killing fields we go and watch some traditonal dancing some children that just want a donation!
we spend the afternoon in the orphanage it was a amazing experience, we bought the children loads of fruit, rice, crayons and paper and as soon as we walked in the kids run to us like they have never seen a white person before all they wanted was a bit of attention they needed someone to care for them but yet they were so happy... never have i seen children with so little yet so happy it was amazing.
we all spent the day there the girls watch as some of the orphans did a little dancing show and i played footall with the rest of them. there was 3 blokes from america who were doing a documentry on orphaned children around the world, they told me how privialaged these children were compared to africa. i showed all the kids a magic trick i have and they thought it was the most amazing thing in the world they could work it out! we left about 5pm and the kids were asking us to please come back and stay it was sad to say goodbye knowing they had no one to go home too!
We arrived home at our guest house and booked a bus to siam reap it would take around 6-8 hours (the worst thing about the buses in cambodia are the constant beeping, this is too let other drivers know they are there because for some reason they cant use mirrors and also the terrible karoke video and music playing very loud non stop it drove me insane!!) we then went out for another cambodian meal still the best food from any country ive been so far!
Siam Reap
We awake very early to catch the bus to siam reap it was around 6.30 (the first of many early starts) as i said these buses are the worst experience ever we get to our guesthouse around 4pm that day absoulutly exhausted but decide to go straight to ankor wat via tuk tuk!
Our driver was the best one yet such a friendly bloke when we left we treated him to dinner (he worked 15 hours a day for around $4 and had to go home to the country help feed his parents and sister and her children while saving for his uni fees) We got to ankor wat in time to watch the sunset... you could ride elephants up to the top but they were all out when we got there so we had a 15minute trek but it was wel worth it! the views were amazing and so peaceful despite a massive amount of tourists
There were a few monks up there and they wont speak to anyone but one approached me with a friend who wasn't practicing and started talking to me and perrine they are so peaceful and harmless they look almost untouchable even though they have nothing but a golden robe!
we left ankor wat and headed back to the guest house we bought our pass for the next day and decided we would make the most of it and get up at sunrise to see it at ankor wat we also decided on a bit of exercise so we rented bikes aswell! that evening we went into town and had a bit of dinner and just relaxed knowing it was another early start!
We awake at 5am it is me perrine phoebe and another australian girl we met called phoebe who decide to rent bikes and cycle the 20km to ankor wat after riding about 15km in the pitch black the phoebe im travelling with gets a puncture!! so we decide to tie it to a tree and continue our journey (the other phoebe decides she will run!) we get there and its still dark...we walk in and around the temple and come out in time to watch the sunrise...it was worth it how many people can say the have done that!
we continue on our bikes to the temple of rayon an amazing temple with heads on each statue probably the best one there in my opinion! we stop for coffee about 9am and then the other pheobe decides to head back and meet her friends..we head back to our guest house soon after to inform them about the bike (something we forgot to do when we left was pick it up it cost us $60) and to eat some breakfast!
we head back another 20kms around 11am and cycle round all day and visit various temples including the tomb raider one which is amazing! by 4.30 we are physically exhausted knowing we have to cycle home we leave and begin our long long journey back it seemed like another 100km not 20 but we made it home in about an hour absoultly knackered! altogether i think we have rode around 100km all day. we spend the evening with a well deserve massage!
we leave the next day for the beaches (it seems like ages since we have seen water and sand) we go to the town of Sihanouk Ville.
Sihanouk Ville
another horrible early start and another horribe bus journey the only bright spot being meeting 3 blokes 2 from essex and 1 from the midlands they are a good laugh and they end up travelling we us to phu quoc isand.
after finding a place to stay we all head out for dinner apart from perrine who is very ill in bed with a temperature. we also sort our visa's for our next trip to vietnam. we check out the beach that night for a bit of a night life but there isn't much just massive beach bars and no people! very irrie... it doesn't matter as they sell docter peppers (memories of home)
the next we all head down the beach and have our first bit of bad luck since the trip began one of the little beggers stole phoebes purse with all her money etc. so ittitating (i hate the little beggers!) today was the start of my first illness in 5weeks of travelling asia i think ive done quite well!
For the next 2 day i was sick in bed so didn't see much beach i had a bad fever etc and couldn't eat! the only thing i dragged myself along to see was a resturant where ur dining surround by snakes and crocodile pretty cool place. the next day we begin our journey to vietnam and what a journey it turned into!
Rach Gia & Phu Quoc Island
We leave fairly early and have to get a cab to the border of ha tien as there are no buses avaliabe to start off our driver doesn't know the way so we swap half way through our journey and switch cabs ( the cab cost $50) when we get the other cab he takes us too the border of ha tien followed by motor bikes for about half a mile.... when we arrive at the border the cabbie says he cant take us no further!
i decide that was a joke and try to bribe the vietnam police to let our cab through but apparantly he was allowed so we ended up getting motobikes with our rucksack across to the bus station of ha tien after taking 1 hour to cross the border and fill in passport forms etc. we arrive at another terrible bus station and get the bus to the dock of rach gia hoping to catch a boat to phu quoc island
After about 3 hours on a bus we reach rach gia bus station again surrounded by motobikes saying they will take us to the port to catch the boat so we do.. when we arrive we find that at 3.30 we are too late only 2 boats go a day at 8.00am and 1.30pm so we are stuck here for 1 night! we decide as we are here we might as well explore...
A bit of a mistake we are looked at like aliens i don't think alot of westerners come to this part of vietnam but its all for the experience we cant seem to find anywhere to eat at all so me and perrine go on a mission to find a resturante and a super market it takes a hour but we find it.. the night here did me good as i was still ill so i got it out my system here! i stayed in bed ill while the girls went out for dinner.
the next we finally get our boat to phu quoc island (pure paradise) our boat takes nearly 3 hours and again we are looked at like aliens that might be to do with the fact we are laying on the top deck sunbathing though!
we arrive at the port around 4.30 and get a cab to the main beach where we were meeting perrine's friend todd who had sorted our accomadation! well it wasn't the best place it was so hot with no air con and there were mosquitos everywhere but it was ok..right on the beach. the beach was stunning by far the best i had seen so far!
I stayed in the bugalow 1 night and that was more than enough i was waking up in dee sweats i spent thenext day searching for new cold accomadation! we found somewere that night when we met up with dom and stu (the boys we met on the bus). they were staying in this irrie looking resort with massive statues of mermaids dolphins unicorns etc everywhere! it was very odd but had aircon so i was happy!
The next day we decided to rent mopeds and drive up to see the waterfalls we headed off about 15km and it was amazing as it was dry season there was a massive waterfall with only a tiny amount of water very weird it was still lovely trekking through the jungle to find it! (90% of phu quoc was national park forests) after seeing the waterfall i decided to find another beach so we headed 20km south and all we found was a little town and the port the beach across the port was only attainable by boat i was gutted it looked so nice!
i lost the rest of the guys in the port area so made my way back alone on my moped. i drove around 5km and noticed a sign saying 1.5km right to hoi san beach so i thought why not.. it was down a dirt track but my bike made it! i arrived at a little cafe and walked straight through it parking my bike there and i realised i stumbled upon paradise!
this beach was pure white sand crystal clear water palm trees all around and only abòut 20 people there. there was one resort on this beach and nothing else i was in heaven absoultly stunning i was just gutted i was all alone!
that night about 10 of us went out for dinner we built up a little bit of a grounp on phu quoc which was quite nice again there isn't much nightlife here but it such a peacful amazing island it doesn't really matter.. 1 thing i did realise is that the island is so built up massive resorts, nice resturantes etc but lacking in people it is as they are waiting for a boom in tourism to almost make it like phuket! after dinner we went to play killer on the pool and built our group up even more with 2 guys from melbourne and 1 guy from liverpool it turned into a big as night as you can get on this island in bed by 1!!
we were up the next day again early this time for a boat trip which included snorkling... overall a good day everyone we were with last night was on our boat so there were about 12 of us and we just chilled all day on a boat went snorkling (nice but not as nice as phi phi) ate fresh fish and then went fishing (i caught my first fish!) we then to my disapointment ended up going to the beach i found a day earlier! i thought i was the lucky one!
that was to be our last night in phu quoc and we decided to book a boat back to rach gia to go on to ho cha minh city...we struggled to get one first of all as they were expecting a monsoon so we didn't know we could leave until the morning again another early start 6.30am!
Thanks for reading my blog i will write another soon for my journey from ho cha minh to hanoi! it should be interesting journey along the coast of vietnam.. love to everybody back home miss you all
