Sundayour 2nd day in CanberraWe moved the van all of 30 yds to our new spot and managed to set of for our 2nd days sightseeing.First stop was the old bus depot which now houses a Sunday market. We are not big fans of markets but this was down under the must do list.We bought our lunch there, a selection of Jordanian pastries and cakes. Our diet is going from bad to worse.Next stop the National institute of Sport where the elite sports people are chosen to live and train for 3 years. It is a huge complex with various halls, pitches and 3 swimming pools. Our tour guide was a young man who is a 20k walker. He is 1 of 5 walkers there at the present time but only 3 can go to the Olympics and he doesn't expect to be picked. It was interesting but involves a lot of walking.I wouldn't recommend it for children, they would be bored and if you don't go on the tour there is really nothing to see.We had a drink and a cake?there before we dashed of to the National museum of Australia which is housed in a very futuristic building down by the lake but we only had an hour there and decided to go back on Monday morning. That turned out to be not a good idea as the best bits are being renovated so it was a quick dash round and then of to Parliament house which is an amazing place. It was planned to build on top of the hill but they realised it would stick out like a sore thumb so they took a huge amount of the hill away and stored it on one side while they plopped the building into the crater so the part you see on postcards and tv is only the top half of it.When they had finished the building they brought the soil back and recreated the hill round the building. We went on the tour which lasts about 50 minutes and it was very interesting but we had to leave it and join the queue to get into the chamber for prime ministers question time. The Prime Minster. The deputy Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition are very good speakers but the newfinance minister Wayne Swan appears to be out of his depth in debate let's hope he is better at his sums.We also went up on the roof from where there are fantastic views.Tomorrow we make our way to Benalla in Victoria where on Weds. We intended to meet up with a man who Joe knew as a lad in the youth club at Euxton where he was brought up.He hasn't seen him for 40 odd years and found him by chance on the internet. We said we would call if we ever came down this way and sent him an e mail on Sunday saying we are here but we got a shock with his reply because he said he would love to see us but isn't too good socially because his son and son's fiancé have been killed recently in a road accident and this Saturday he is scattering his sons ashes where his wives ashes are scattered ( she died about 18 months ago)So we don't know what to expect as he may not want to see us on the day. When he first asked us to come he wanted us to stay with him but given the circumstances we shall book into a caravan park. Please remember us and especially Al in your prayers.
