Hello again! Just a quick update of our journey from Oklahoma to Flagstaff, Grand Canyon.
As you can see more photos have been added. Amarillo was a one night stop which we had intended as we had heard there wasn't much to see there, which was true. We stayed in a basic Motel 6 which was bargainous but morealess on the highway! We did some of Route 66 to get here but got a bit lost as signs seemed to disappear and we ended up heading North a couple of times when we should have been going West! The highway was a lot easier to follow. We went into downtown Amarillo for the evening and as luck would have it we stumbled upon a car cruise down the main strip! Hot rods, classics, drag cars etc. Locals were seated on the pavements watching the cars go by with beers in hand. After watching the cruise for a while, and getting lots of photos, we found a little Italian restaurant called Napolis which was very popular! We had to wait a while for a table but it was worth it. Food was good!
The next day we were off to Albuquerque. As you can see from the photo, we had a stop at a souvenir store to stretch our legs and have a wander, oh and to try on some cowboy hats of course! Albuquerque wasn't what we had expected, in a good way. It had a modern downtown and then an Old Town which was very quaint with little streets and cobbled patios. There was a definite Mexican feel from the buildings and many traditional restaurants. We were glad to have a two night stay here as there was more to do and see. We visited their well known Rattlesnake Museum. This was good and Joanne wasn't feeling all that scared until the glass tanks were soon filled with tarantulas!!
We are now in Flagstaff which has lovely scenery with mountains surrounding the town. We drove part the way with the roof down cruising along straight roads, just as you would imagine it. Although the fun soon stopped for a while when we drove directly under a storm cloud without realising. Oops, we got wet! We had planned to stop close to Flagstaff at the Meteor Crater. Joanne also got a little driving in. Yes it was a straight road and yes there wasn't anyone around! It was fun though. The crater was huge and a worthwhile stop, although very hot-heat plus altitude doesn't mix well.
The weather hasn't been too great so far in Flagstaff, a lot cooler and very stormy. Today we went to the Grand Canyon National Park and it has been one of our best days yet. Words and pictures do not give it any justice! You just have to see it for yourself to believe how huge and amazing it really is. Joanne was feeling a little scared as it is obviously very high and you are very close to the edge with only some parts having surrounding barriers. Joanne took a lot of photos of brave Joe (or crazy!) who climbed onto rocks out in the canyon which is too scary to mention when you are watching. There was a lot of shouting from Joanne for Joe to be careful and watch that step etc. The usual nagging when your boyfriend is trying to be a daredevil. One man quoted to Joanne, 'Is he trying to prove something?!' haha. Think Mummy Cripps would have had a fit! Wait until you all see the video...If Joanne is feeling brave I may venture out onto that little rock but maybe with my eyes shut (or not!) We have passes all week to visit the canyon so I'm sure many more photos will be on their way.
I hope you are all well. We are missing you all lots and wish you could be here experiencing this all with us. Love to you all, Joanne and Joe xxx
