There were only 6 of us on my Groovy Grape tour from Alice Springs to Adelaide. And once again I was with a pretty quiet bunch. It consisted of two Asian girls, who were nice enough but kept themselves to themselves, Phillip a German guy who seeemed to have misplaced his sense of humour, Bertina a German girl who when I asked her a question always looked either shocked, as if I was accusing her of killing my whole family, or confused, as if she had never before been asked a question, and then Kaylee, an American of the strange-arty-film-maker variety who insisted on introducing awkwardness in to the already quiet group scenario with tales, for example, of her parent's messy divorce. It was a scream a minute, let me tell you! And just in case you didn't get that, it was sarcasm. So I often ended up chatting away to our tour guide Clancy. In fact on our second day I took to the passenger seat to keep him entertained on the two hour journey to our breakfast stop.
The first day we set off nice and early and had a few stops en route to Cooper Pedy an opal mining town where the first white settlers burrowed into the land to create 'underground homes'. We went to an Opal mine museum, before heading to a Kangaroo orphanage and then we set up home in our underground bunkhouse for the night. For dinner we walked across the road to John's Pizza bar. The following day we had a lot of driving to do in order to reach Adelaide. And so I mostly read books, slept and listened to music. Not a great deal to report here I have to admit.
