This was the challenge. So we set off on our way to the inca trail. We had a private bus and a tour guide just for the two of us plus 6 other people ( 5 porters and a chef) who carried all of our stuff and the food which we would eat for the next few days. They would run past us in order to beat us to each lunch stop and campsite so that everything was all ready for us when we arrived. It was a very good service and all we had to do was walk and carry a backpack. I make that sound easy. It was not. The second day was the hardest as we reached over 4000m climbing up a mountain. What we didn't realise was that we walked up to then walk straight back down again and in addition it was pouring with rain! Unfortunately that is how it stayed for the majority of the rest of the trek so we dressed in our ponchos grinned and bared it.
The last day of our trek proved to be a little more of a struggle then anticipates with katrien was waking up feeling very poorly. But, she powered through and made it to the end regardless. We were very pleased when we finally arrived at the end point at machu picchu, the sun even came out for us! We were greeted by the rest of our group (as they opted out of the trek) with a very warm welcome. Our first point of call was to visit the doctor and within an hour Kat was back up on her feet ready to explore machu piccuh.
All in all it was such an amazing experience... not sure we would volunteer to trek it again just yet though!
Please do not judge us for the state of the pictures unfortunately our appearance was the last of our worries during the trek!
