Jo's Most Excellent Adventure
Greetings honourable visitors to my latest blog!
Here I am in Cambodia on another whirlwind tour through a fantastic country! (Though not as cool as Laos) I finally have a day off from all the sightseeing and bus hopping in the form of a "free day" so spent the time doing all the stuff I should have done in Bangkok when I was lying ill with a tummy bug! As you can see I've updated all my photos, managed to take around 300 alone at Angkor Wat, probably all looks the same but the place was soo fantastic you just couldn't stop snapping away! Anyways, more about that later!
Started my tour in Bangkok and after the disastrous end to the last one I was a bit wary. Luckily though the tour was packed out with super cool youngsters like myself, (though I did manage to get stuck in a shared room with the only old person on the trip - sods law) spent the first evening getting to know everyone at a meal, (affordable too yes!) and then went off with my new chum Claire, (a local girl from Bath!) and got an awesome back, shoulders, head and foot massage at the petrol station! Most bizarre, they serve gas by day and at night the local people turn the garage forecourt into an open air massage place and a bar. A tad bit disturbing as everyone was smoking away next to the petrol pumps and each table had a candle on it for ambience...don't know what sort of ambience it would be if the petrol station caught light!!! Anyway, was good fun and where else but Bangkok would you find it!!
Quite glad to the finally leave the city, even if it meant getting up at 5.30am to get an 10 hr bus over the border to CAMBODIA!! The Thai side of the journey was fine and went really quickly, but the Cambodian was just a pot holed dirt road and I bounced all the way to Siem Reap. Don't think it helped that the bus driver had a can of Angkor beer in his hand the entire journey! Only in Cambodia! Had planned to crash out but had a really nice meal at a local restaurant with the girls on my trip and we ended up chatting until about 10.30pm. Okay maybe not that late....unless you had to get up at 4.30am the next morning to go and see sunrise at Angkor Wat!
Bleary eyed we all dragged ourselves up there, only to find that it was vast cloud coverage and not a sunrise in sight! Ah well, I'll just get a postcard! Was really cool as everyone went back to bad after the sun had failed to rise by 6.30, I decided to stay and look around and it was awesome as it was practically completely empty! Spent about two hours alone walking around the enormous cloisters of Angkor Wat, the carvings on the bas reliefs were so spectacular! In better condition than the carvings on the Rameses III temple in Luxor to those who were there! Was a very excited little bunny! Would deffo like to study more about ancient Khmer history as is so interesting! Climbed right to the top of Ankor Wat, (was v steep) before rejoining my tour group to go round the rest of the temples in the complex.
Had a fantastic rest of day, exploring all these ancient buildings, practically rock climbing to get to the top of some, very appropriate as got to go to the Ta Prohm Temple were the Lara Croft movies were filmed. Was deffo my fave temple, check out the photos to see why! Move over Angelina, its Jo Fry - Tomb Raider!
Spent over 12 hours at the Angkor temples and was absolutely shattered! Still I had another energy to go out drinking with the gang until 4 am this morning, even going to a restaurant with a croc pit right underneath the tables which were on platforms above it! Again only in Cambodia!....am regretting it a bit now. Sooooooo tiiiiirrrreeeedddd! Ah well a day of rest now before heading to Penon Phemn tomorrow!
Enjoy the photos!
