Well, as some of you might already know there have been some big changes in camp. we are no longer a 3 but a 2 and a 1. Jenny has left on her own adventure to cut out some of our plan and move on faster so she can get home as soon as possible becasue she misses her family too much. I am sure she will explain it better though.
Hopefully everyone will keep posting their adventures on here though.
We all arrived in Phnom Penh and immediately found bargain accomodation in a matter of minutes...i think it must have been a record.
We visited the Tuol Sleng Genocide museum which was really good. It really did shock you into silence. It was brilliantly set up and we all definitely learned a lot. It's hard to explain it unless you know about it/have seen it- we just got to see all the rooms where the prisoners were kept and photos of everyone and torture instruments etc. it was pretty shocking learning about it all.
The killing fields were a similar experience- towers of skulls and all the mass gravfes where they were found. While walking around music was played thorugh loudspeakers..it was a really sureal experience and atmosphere. It explained how all the prisoners were killed and treated. Again it stunned you to silence.
On a lighter note we found the 'Russian'Market (didn't see anythign russian about it) which sold everything..clothes,DVDs, food, souvenirs, stationery, mechanics geer..and the list goes on. we also found a brilliantly cheap veggie cafe which we ate at most nights. we also took our first moto ride of the trip (riding on the back of a motorcycle)- Jules'first ever motorbike experience!
Next on our agenda was SIhanoukeville - BEACH
Again- cheap accomodation was easy to find as well as cheap food ( we ate all but one of our meals in the same restaurant becasue the people were so nice and the food was really good and cheap). the beach itself wasn't anything special ( of course Cornwall beaches are still the best) but the sea was really calm and great to swim in and the weather was brilliant so we enjoyed a good day on the beach. this was the day Jenny decided that she would leave us for greener pastures.
We waved her bus to Phnom Penh off the next day and there were a few tears. No one wanted us to part but now our agendas were different it seemed logical.
On our Last day in Sihanoukeville we took a boat trip round the islands off Sihanoukeville. Our first stop was snorkelling. Neil dived straight in and within minutes had managed to step on a sea urchin leaving stingers in his foot. When he got back in the boat one of the Cambodians (who spoke little English) came at him with a knife but instead of gauging out the spines she started tapping them with the handle of the knife. When we got off at our next stop- Bamboo Island- we asked one of the guys who spoke english why she did it..apparently tapping helps..and lime so he hobbled off to the nearest cafe for some lime. We got to spend 4 hours on the island so we had a quick look round but spent most of the time swimming, snorkelling and stroking the gorgeous island cats. Lunch was delicious fresh BBQd fish and bread and salad. Our final stop was off another island for some more snorkelling. We were 2 of only 4 who jumped in although we gave up on snorkelling gear this time and just went for a good swim!
Today we took the bus back to Phnom Penh and will leave in a few days for Ratanakiri- jungle, waterfalls and volcanic craters apparently..should be awesome...we'll keep you updated.
bye for now x
