Were back in Vietnam - home of the consummate cup of coffee!
We love it iced, hot, and strong! The dripping strong brew mixed with condensed milk is a treat we love and it is everywhere! Saigon is better than we expected. Our hotel is in a perfect location - Close to the Bien Thanh market, shopping, Notre Dame, the War Remants Museum, etc. The room is nice and we love escaping to it to throw ourselves on the bed and swoon under the air conditioner! It is Hot! We took it easy the first day and got to know the area. We hired a guide for the afternoon and saw the war Remants Museum and the Reunifixation Palace. Lucky I saw a Vietnam War book on the floor of our library before we left and picked it up for .50! It sure helped with understanding the terrible history this country has gone through. Would hate to be an American. What a tragedy that war was.....
Had a great pho for supper, but touched a chili and you should have seen my eyes when I took off my contacts at night! Ouch!
Today we went to the Cu Chi tunnels which were amazing to see! 200+ km of three levels of tunnels in which the Vietcong lived and hid from the Americans. You should have seen the intro movie about what happened to the 'peaceful gentle people' of Cu Chi - the 'crazy killer devil Americans' bombed innocent people... It was tragic to hear it, but interesting to hear all the info from their perspective....
A couple tunnels were widened to fit large! tourists and the one we went in was 30 meters long, pitch black and hot! Did not really like it! Terry has to so it backwards because at the beginning he turned around when there was room to take a picture of me. He couldn't turn around!!!
You could see throughout the tour that they were very ingenious fighters. All we could do was shake our heads at the sad futility of it all....
We did shoot the AK-47 and that was loud but interesting. A far cry from shooting gophers on the farm...
Wewent to a highly recommended restaurant for supper. Was good. All the dishes were new to us. Th e vegetables were great and the hotpot fish soup ended up being vey tasty. Terry's caramelized pork was very good.
Tomorrow we are off to the Mekong Delta for two days. Wondering how it will be as we are on a tour with 20 others.

Colette Too funny about Terry in the tunnel!! Not so funny for him I am sure!! Sounds like you are learning so much and yes...the sad fulity of it all! Poor, poor innocent people.
jeanne much the same is happening in Iraq and Afghanistan . We got Saddam- we got Osama- it's time to leave- 10 long years. AND we forget much too quickly, what a waste.
madeleine I can't even think of you two in the tunnel, you know how I feel about underground experiences, caves being one of them.I would have panicked to have to back up to get out.I should have left that Vietnamese book with you,it explains the entire war and the horrific pain and death it caused.Only time will heal them & future generations.I'm still not caught up with the things I have to do.I must get the two quilt squares done before next Sunday.Colette is leaving then.Keep enjoying your holiday and stay healthy.Love Mom.
