Melbourne was a breath of fresh air after the heat of Queensland, but we soon started moaning that we were too cold! With grey skies and lower than average temperatures we felt like we were back home & were just praying for good weather for the Melbourne Cup.
We were lucky enough to be going to Cup Day, the biggest race day in the Australian calendar, and only arriving in Melbourne 2 days before we had a mad rush around the city trying to put together decent outfits in time. Hopefully we didn't do too badly for people living out of backpacks!
Luckily for us, the sun did make an appearance and we had a fantastic day out at Flemington Racecourse. Godolphin (who Caroline worked for at home) had a runner in the Cup so it was great to see a few familiar faces before and after the race. Ignoring the bookies' favourite Bart Cummings, we put our money on 'Shocking' to win and ofcourse had to go for Godolphin's 'Crime Scene' aswell. To our complete shock (excuse the pun) we backed the winner and 'Crime Scene' came a very close second too. So we walked away with sore feet, full of champagne and a bit of extra cash too!
After a day off recovering, we decided to head out to the 'Great Ocean Road', something not to be missed if you're in Melbourne. The road starts a couple of hours outside of Melbourne and is one of the most scenic drives in the World. It was stunning as we passed through Bells Beach - made famous in the film 'Point Break' - Apollo Bay & Port Campbell before arriving at the hi-light of the drive in our opinion, the Twelve Apostles. These huge rock formations jutting out of the sea are on many a postcard but due to erosion it's hard to spot all twelve now. Still a spectacular sight and the colour of the sea against them was amazing.
So after a pretty busy but enjoyable week in Melbourne we had to pack our bags once again, grab another $1 a day relocation van and back-track on ourselves up to Sydney where we are now. We're in the middle of a 5 day heat-wave which is unbearable, everything is so much more expensive than it used to be, there's a severe lack of jobs, and to make it worse we walk past all the shops and lovely restaurants each day! Despite that, it's great to be here and it's our favourite place in Australia, so we'll keep you posted.....
