On the final evening at Klein's Camp in Tanzania we went on an evening/night safari, which included sundowner wine and beer at the peak of a ridge looking toward Kenya (picture). Our next camp, Bateleur in Kenya, was almost visible from the hill. Next morning getting ready to be taken to the airstrip for I thought a short flight to Camp Bateleur, I noticed our itinerary had the flight taking 4 hours. When we were making parting comments to the manager I asked why the itinerary had such a long time. It was explained that crossing country boundaries was not the same as crossing state boundaries. We had to fly east, halfway across Tanzania to Kilimanjaro to exit Tanzania and fly over to Nairobi to enter Kenya. When we got on the bush plane at Klein's camp the pilot informed us there were 4 stops to Arusha, then change planes for a flight to Kilimanjaro for a flight to Nairobi. On the stop before Arusha, the plane blew a tire landing, requiring another plane to be sent with the tire but also to pick us up. We had 45 minutes to make a 25-minute flight to Arusha to drop off people then a 12 minute flight to Kilimanjaro where they were holding the plane for us. We made it (45 mins late) but going through exit immigration then to Nairobi incoming immigration the total travel time was 9 hours. We arrived tired but to a camp in the woods adjacent to the savannah of the Serengeti. Today we are relaxing looking out over the Serengeti from our tent-cabin. An evening safari is planned.
