Hi all!
So we've joined our second tour. After checking Out of the lub d hostel we flagged down a tuk tuk and made our way to the joining hotel, thought we must have got the wrong place as it was really fancy but apparently we'd just been too used to our tent and we were at the right hotel. Had some lunch and some nonalcoholic cocktails (most unlike us) they were absolutely delicious though then chilled out by the pool until it was time to get ready for the arrival meeting. Had a cheeky Singapore sling waiting on the meeting to start. Our new group is definately different to the last one, for a start everyone is around about our age, secondly they're all british, there's 12 of us, 11 girls and one poor b****** of a guy! Everyone is lovely though. After the meeting we went for a few drinks and a few of us then headed to khao san road, infamous in Bangkok for it's nightlife. To be honest it was a pretty messy night culminating in V and I almost sleeping in for departure time the next day. But we made it just in the nick of time, albeit very worse for wear!
Made our way to the Cambodian border on our way to siem reap, the journey took around 4-5 hours in total but was pretty uneventful, I recovered from my hangover by sleeping the whole journey, only waking up to sort out my visa and formalities required to cross the border! Hotel in siem reap was also very nice (think they're lulling us into a false sense of security!) had some food at a local village, one of the young girls gave us a tour, so sad to see how they live but theyre all so friendlu and happy, the meal was delicious and afterwards a few of the kids from the village joined us to say hello! We then visited the nightmarket and then had an early night as we were having to get up at 4.15 to make our way to Angkor wat in time to catch the sunrise.
Our early rise unfortunately was a complete waste of time as it was a cloudy day so we didn't get to see any sum rise over the temple. Absolutely raging, I wad really f***ing tired!! Went back to the hotel to get breakfast (the best we've had in Asia so far) had a nap for an hour then we all made our way back to Angkor wat to explore the different temples and ruins. A sight definately worth the hype as it's so impressive in size and detail, however it's so big and with the humidity during rainy season is a bit of a struggle, still really glad we done it though!! We spent all day there visiting the various temples including the one that was used for tomb raider which was pretty cool. Our guide, a local Khmer, was also a highlight - he was absolutely useless but the most hilarious person I've come across this trip. Definately made us laugh a lot!
Later that night we all decided to sample the delights of pub street as it would be our last night in siem reap. Had a brilliant night, everyone was on fine form and many a bucket was consumed! Got hounded by young girls after leaving the club with newborn babies in their arms begging. They claimed they didn't want money just a meal...one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do was to walk away from them but speaking to a tuk tuk driver he explained that it's a scam, the children aren't really theirs and they wait for you to get your money out to pay for something to eat for them then rob you.
Today we all got up feeling pretty delicate and started on the 6 hour journey to phnom penh. Passed through a lot of countryside which is petty much all just made up of rice field after rice field, the actual land is beautiful but the poverty of the people here is unreal, they're still recovering from the difficulties of the genocide and Khmer rouge regime. We're going to see the killing fields tomorrow. To be honest I'm dreading this, reckon it's going to be a pretty sobering sight. We have some shopping and cocktails planned for afterwards to lighten the mood though! Will obvs keep you all updated on how it goes!
Night night xxxxx
