Thurs 24th
We arrived in Tsim Sha Tsui. Straight away we could tell this was where the money is. Designer shops, watches, bags, shoes. Fancy shop window displays everywhere, and our hostel - 'Rainbow Lodge', was right in the middle of it, in a swish multi-story building. Up the lift we go - we had read reviews about how it was a small set up.
And it was. The hostel is in, essentially, an appartment. Very very clean! Male cleaner very friendly too.
Checked in with Maggie and into our room. Into our tiny room. With 10 beds - 3 triple bunk beds and a double bunk (the 11th had been given over for bag storage) and a stack of lockers, in a room the size of a spare bedroom in a regular house! It really was a squeeze. Two showers, two toilets, a washing machine, fridge (with beer!), microwave, toaster, free tea & coffee, and sofas and a table - they got it all in!
It had gone mid day at that stage and we were wrecked and hungry.
Out to get supplies and eat. Wow it's expensive here. Up and down, up and down. We dived into the cheapest place we could find. Cheap was the word - over cooked naff food and dishwater for a drink. Yuck. Frustrated, tired and unsatisfied I greedily and foolishly scoffed a chocolate bar - biting off, quite literally more than I could chew, as I broke my false tooth. It was then I noticed we were on 'Prat Avenue'. How apt.
Back to the hostel, asked Maggie for a dentist - it would have to go to a lab and would take a couple of weeks. Damn. Found/bought superglue. It worked, uncomfortable but ok.
In the evening we ate at Pizza Hut (small cheap fish pie, fish 'n' chips) the best value we could find.
We walked round town noticing lots of people sat opposite HK Island (must be something going on?). Then came a yell,
"Oi, Frank!"
It couldn't be? It was Dan and Louise! Wow, how'd they do that?! We sat together and watched the light show across the harbour. A cool spectacle including music with the light show cast on the buildings. We exchanged our latest travel stories and bid farewell. They were off to Vietnam the next day.
Back to hostel, met and chatted to Andrew Chinese/Californian. Then into bed. A very long tiring day.
Fri 25th
Over to HK island via the famous Star ferry, HK$ 2.70 (about 20p). We headed for the tram station, via the metro. Whilst map observing a lady with her young son asked if we needed help. She directed us to the tram station, bringing us through a 'wet market' (live fish/sea food in water) and pointed out the bus station and told us of some parks and beaches worth visiting too.
On board the old tall thin tram, 70 cents (6p). A very cheap tour indeed. Slow going too, stops were every 100m or so and traffic was heavy. Saw some funny named shops - w***os' was the favourite. We are childish! Very hot strong sunshine, easily 35 - 36°c.
Dan and Lousie said they found a Tescos here - we looked...and found a brillant bakery instead. Tuna bun for Frank and a Pineapple one for me.
Hong Kong reminds us of London. The traffic lights are the same, double decker buses, the road markings and signs. Cars have right hand drive. There's a buzz, not quiet the same as London but an excited vibe. It's very clean too. Same prices!
Back to the hostel, via the ferry again, Jenny (a different Jenny) was on reception today. My tooth was uncomfortable so I filed away excess glue with a nail file. Knackered we nodded off on the sofa. A quick google check and we found a Tesco - 45 mins via a bus ride. Another motorised tour! Found Tesco, got microwave meals - what luxury - and other little bits.
Back, ate dinner and met fellow dwellers...
Kirean - Portsmouth "London"
Charlotte - Germany
Eric - California, U.S
Jason - Florida, U.S.
We ventured out for drinks for "Happy Hour", at 'Tequila Jack's' - which finished at 9pm. Back to hostel (via supermarket 'International' for more beers) chatted travelling and played drinking games with the gang. Good laugh - we'll remember those games.
Bed just after 11pm. The hostel has a curfew and others were leaving early morning. Fair do's. Slept better despite road noise through single pane windows. Ear plugs actually worked!
Sat 26th
Star Ferry back over to Hong Kong Island and heading upwards. And up. And up. And up!
More exploring saw us meandering up towards Lan Kwai Fong and up along Stone Slabs Street. Further up still we stumbled upon the Hong Kong Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. We peeked in for a few minutes. Out and up again, passed the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens. (Near Dr. Sun-Yat Sen's Museum - remember him?).
A challenge was set then, we'll walk up to The Victoria Peak, known as The Peak locally. It's 554m (1811 feet) above sea level. Clear skies with sunshine and the temperature was 33°c real feel 38°c. So a great day for sweating. And boy did we. My t-shirt was drenched as was Frank's. Water streamed down our backs and dripped off of our faces. Along the path a small gathering of people, about halfway up through the park revealed they were looking at a snake! A long thin one with a yellowish stripe on it's back.
Onwards. At the very top (got ice lollies!) is a building with a huge flat viewing platform, The Sky Terrace 428. With 'the best view of Hong Kong.' And at HK$ 52 they could keep it. Instead we ventured along a path to Lions Pavillion where we got a great view for free! Far better. Approx 3.2km walk from the ferry. A little more absorbing the atmosphere/ view and more people asking for photos with Frank - proper rock star stuff here - we wondered back down again. Heading for the bakery we found the day before.
Star ferry back to the Hostel. Pot noodles and bread for dinner. High end stuff here.
M&S for bras - well that's high end. Beers were bought too for a night in.
We met Julious from Germany. Who was off out with the boys - it was the Champions League final Liverpool vs. Real Madrid and they were hunting for a bar showing the match.
We met Lois from Devon and two Americans - one had lived in Vietnam. We chatted til the wee hours (2am!).
The boys came back and watched the match via Youtube.
