On Tuesday I didn't do very much, just relaxed and had a walk around Queenstown. There are loads of trendy cafes/bars/restaurants here and some good views across the lake. Walking down the street you often see people paragliding down the mountain side. It's much smaller than what I expected but seems like a nice place to spend a few days. We have a couple of drinks on Tuesday night in Altitude
Wednesday was the day of the bungy jump! The company we did the jump with is AJ Hacknett (they control all the big jumps in New Zealand). We couldn't really afford to do all the jumps so just went straight for the biggest, called The Nevis. The jump is 134m and the platform has been built above a canyon. They say the freefall lasts 8 seconds. Everyone was pretty nervous and I ended up being 3rd from last to do the jump! So I had to watch everyone do it before I had a go. Everyone said "don't look down" and "do it on your first attempt"! You have to stand on the platform and the guy does a 3 second countdown. I jumped on one but messed by my dive and went knee first! Didn't matter though as somehow I ended up head first half way down. Scariest thing I've ever done and the rush is incredible. I have the DVD and pictures as proof!
When we got back to Queenstown we went for a couple of celebratory beers. For dinner we had a famous Fergburger, which is an amazing burger bar in Queenstown (burgers also have comedy names like Bun Laden and The Codfather). We then went on a pub crawl which was organized by a company that charged 25 dollars, but it wasn't worth it as we only went to about 2 new bars! I was pretty tired anyway so didn't have too late a night.
Today, had lunch at Vudu Café (as recommended in Lonely Planet). Very good. Sat down by the lakeside and am currently sat in the internet café sorting out a few photos and emails. Been very lucky with the weather, nice sunny day again. About 10 of us are clubbing together tonight and making a stir fry. I am leaving Queenstown at 8.30am tomorrow to head to Christchurch. I have one day there, then one day in Kaikoura before heading to Wellington in the North Island. So some long coach journeys ahead, but shouldn't be too bad as I have yet to see a traffic jam since arriving (not sure if they exist outside Auckland). In fact there are hardly any queues anywhere, which makes a nice change! Probably why nobody is stressed over here. I'll update again when I arrive in the North!
