Hi everyone. It's been 2 weeks since I last wrote a blog and it's been all go, as we have travelled from Brisbane up to Thailand. I am currently in Koh Phagnan, as island just off of Thailand where the famous full moon party takes place (which is on Saturday night).
On 1 July we spent our first full day in Singapore. The first thing I noticed was the heat and humidity, there wasn't a great deal of wind. Our hostel was good and came with free breakfast, for about 8 pounds a night. We were staying in an area close to Little India, which wasn't the most expensive part of town! The walk to the city took about 30 mins (including a couple of air con stops on the way). The city itself is very clean, as I'd heard, and there were plenty of places to eat by the river. We ended up at Raffles Place (in the CBD) and found a huge food court where you could get a meal for about 2 pounds. We ended up eating there quite a bit!
On the second day in Singapore we went on the Singapore Flyer - their version of the London eye which gave great views of the city. There looked to be a lot of development going on by the river, including a new floating football pitch! The MRT subway was very efficient, everyone was very calm even though the tubes were rammed. Tickets to our hostel were only about 30p. Beer was a bit pricy but we ended up in a trendy bar with some of the city workers, looking a bit "dressed down" with our shorts and t-shirts.
The next day we left for Kuala Lumpur on the train. The journey was about 7 hours but again very efficient. The first shock in Singapore and KL was that not all toilets have any toilet paper, instead a hose which is a pretty unique experience! As was the taxi ride in KL, where the driver had no idea where our hostel was. The boys in the back had a good laugh at me trying to explain in slow English but to no avail. Luckily he called them and we arrived in one piece.
Food in KL was probably better than Singapore. A good Thai Green curry was about 3 pounds. On the second day we visited the Batu Caves, where there is a huge gold Buddha outside. On the way into the caves there are quite a few monkeys, which get a bit aggressive at times. We also walked around the city, including Chinatown, which is great. There were so many fake goods, which were pretty cheap after some bartering. The next day the headed to the twin Petronas Towers (even more spectacular at night) and walked around the shopping centre under them. We then went up the huge Observation Tower to get a great view of the city. Watched Run Fatboy Run and Hancock in the evening - cinema tickets are only 1.50 so thought I'd have a cheap night.
On Monday 7 July we headed to Krabi in Thailand. At the airport we met up with Yaz and went to our hostel in Ao Nang beach. Our hostel was about a 5 minute walk to the beach. The sea in Thailand is the warmest I've ever been in, in places it's just like having a bath. In fact I'm sure some hostels just pump their shower water straight from the sea as the water is a bit salty! We had a good couple of nights in Ao Nang beach; found a local bar who were happy for us to serve ourselves and play music behind the bar.
On the 9th we went to Koh Phi Phi, one of the places badly hit by the tsunami in 2004. As soon as we got off to boat in PP there were hoards of people trying to get you a taxi and accommodation, which was a good job really as we had neither booked! The hotel we stayed in was 10 pounds a night but included a TV, air con and mini bar. PP has some amazing beaches and great resorts. There are still areas under construction but it seems to have recovered really well. Although PP is small there looked to be some really impoverished places (where the islanders lived), especially when you compared them to the big luxurious resorts. On the first night we experienced the first Thai storm - I've never seen 15 minutes of rain like it.
On the second day on PP we went on a Sunset Tour, stopping at various beaches including Monkey Beach and Maya Beach. One of the stops was a lagoon and we could go snorkeling - a shame to see quite a bit of rubbish in the otherwise perfect water. To get on Maya Beach we had the option of jumping off the boat with our sandals on and swimming into some caves. Me and Steve did it, which was a bit more difficult than expected with some huge waves coming over us! You couldn't beat walking onto Maya Beach though. It's been voted the world's most beautiful beach and they filmed "The Beach" there. It's spectacular and definitely the best we've been to yet.
On the 12th myself, Steve and Tom went on 2 scuba dives near PP - Bida Nak and Bida Nai. The coral was spectacular and we saw loads of fish. On the bottom of the sea bed was a lion fish, one of the most deadly in the world! I kept my distance. We were hopeful of seeing some black tip sharks but the guide said the water must have been too warm. That evening we left PP and went to Phuket Town, which was recommended in Lonely Planet. It seemed a nice place and most very touristy. We found what may have been the town's trendiest restaurant and had a 3 course meal with beers for about a tenner. Our accommodation that night was just 2.50 - the price included breakfast!
The following day we got a tuk tuk (taxi with no windows and very small engine) to Patong Beach. This was very touristy, a bit like Thailand's Bendidorm! We took it for what it was and had a couple of good nights. Every corner you turned you were asked if you wanted a massage, taxi or tuk tuk! In the end you just had to ignore them. In the evening we saw quite a lot of lady boys roaming the streets which was pretty bizarre. It's a strange place. We managed to find a bit of home in "The Yorkshire Inn" (come on - we'd eaten Thai food since we arrived!) Roast dinners and fish and chips all around went down a treat. True Brits abroad.
And last night we arrived in Koh Phangan. Our accommodation is right on the beach and the woman running our bungalow does fantastic food. We are in a place called Ban Kai and 30 minutes walk from Had Rin, home to the full moon party. I'll updates everyone again soon. Hope everyone is well, I'm back off to the beach!
