Bangkok, Thailand
After a short flight from Malaysia we landed in Bangkok! It was mental, so so hectic and unlike Malaysia no one spoke English! We got out the airport and had absolutely no idea where we were going- turns out Bangkok has two airports and we only had excellent directions to our hostel from the other one! We were directed to a bus but had no idea how long it would take before we needed to get off- thankfully we looked like confused newbie travellers so after a lot of pointing at a map the driver and several locals were able to tell us our stop! After another train and taxi we finally arrived at the hostel! Emily and I were both meeting five more uni friends at the hostel so we were so excited to see them!
Our hostel was in a perfect location, right on Khaosan Road and was really really nice, more like a hotel than hostel-excellent recommendation Sammy!
The girls had come from England so were pretty knackered so that evening we got some street food and then chilled by the hostel pool- I stupidly sat out all night for the first time without insect repellent! I will NEVER make that mistake again- I woke up the next day with over 40 bites on my legs, I looked diseased!
The next day we explored Bangkok, we got a tuk- tuk (like a taxi) to take us to the lucky Buddha- we had been recommended to go there because it's not a huge tourist attraction, we were the only people there who weren't Thai- they all look quite surprised to see us! We then went to Wat Saket (Temple of the Golden Mount) and timed it perfectly! We had to walk up hundreds of steps but the temple over looked the whole of Bangkok and just as we arrived a ceremony around the Buddha started, one Thai woman wanted Simone, Jenny and I to join in. We were given a handful of white and pink flowers by a monk and then everyone together created one large picture on the floor; it was huge and looked beautiful! We then stepped aside as all the Thai people walked around singing and praying to the Buddha. It was really interesting to see! After that we decided to explore China town as the boys were getting hungry, unfortunately we were a bit early so the stalls hadn't fully been set up and the only things available were big octopus on a stick! I'm up for trying things on the trip but I have to say I wasn't fancying that for dinner!
We got street food again and drank beer by the pool for most of the evening before experiencing Khaosan Road! Khaosan Road road is a street of restaurants, bars and market stalls! We found a live music bar and ordered cocktails! The cocktails all come in buckets! We then went back on the street; there were two bars right by our hostel that would blare the loudest, best music and everyone just dances on the street! It was so so much fun!
The next day we walked to visit Wat Pho (the Temple of the Reclining Buddha) and The Grand Palace, they were incredible and by far the most impressive sites we saw in Bangkok! The Buddha in Watt pho were beautiful, I loved all the colours!
That night we found a cute local Thai restaurant where instead of seats your sit on the floor with cushions- so handy when you're so full as you can have a lie down! We then headed back to Khaosan Road, Jonny, one of the boys we are travelling with, bought a cooked scorpion to try, as they sell them everywhere! Everyone had told us that they tasted like quavers so we all gave it a go- I have no idea what sort of quavers they have been eating as it was vile, the texture was gross, I will definitely not be eating another one any time soon!!
We spent the next day relaxing by the pool and then caught a night bus up to Chang Mai- I have been blessed with being able to sleep anywhere! I slept almost the full 10 hours on the bus and had a great night's sleep!
