JK - After lunch we headed to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Much of the Palace is currently closed because the king died recently. You can still see people mourning his death outside. We did however get to see inside the Silver Pagoda. It got its name from the 5000 silver tiles weighing 1kg each that were used in its construction. It's other name is Wat Preah Keo - Pagoda of the Emerald Buddha (another one) due to the 17th century statue made of Baccarat crystal. While this is very beautiful, there are also a number of other bling Buddhas inside, including one life sized gold Buddha weighing 90kg and decorated with more than 9000 diamonds!
In the evening a few of us went for drinks (happy hour) and then food at the Foreign Correspondents' Club. A bit of a Phnom Penh institution it is set in a lovely colonial house and has stunning views over to the river. A rather lovely way to end a grueling and difficult day.
