Sunday 31st Jan
We were woken up at 6am by a brass band playing on the street....at 6am!!! Why!!!? By this stage we're pretty excited about the thought of Australia and some peace! As we were getting ready to go for breakfast Jay couldn't find his wallet, we both emptied all of our bags and it was nowhere to be found. He thought he had left it at the hostel where we did the elephant trip from so we made our way there praying it would be found. When we got there nobody had seen the wallet but would 'keep an eye out', they also said to go back in an hour when the lady we booked the tour with would be in. We went back to our hotel and over breakfast started to cancel all of the cards. None of the cards had been used so we were petty sure it was lost and not stolen. We soon realised the fact that Jays drivers licence was lost might be a problem for the camper in oz (we hoped not). We went back to the hostel and saw the lady we booked the tour with, she also said she hadn't seen it but would look on the cctv, she ended up showing us the footage of us buying the tour and we saw Jay put said wallet back in his pocket, pretty solid proof it wasn't there. We were clutching at straws but decided to check the hostel from 2 nights before, when we got there the owner wasn't there and the guy who was left in charge spoke absolutely no English. We were trying to mime/charades lost wallet. In the end we used the brilliance of Google to translate, it turned out to not be so brilliant and when we asked 'we have lost a wallet, have you seen one?' we got a message back saying 'we cleaned room and children were fine' ....so that was the end of that!
We decided to make the most of our last few hours in Chiang Mai and headed to meet our new friends Ren and Roman at the hotel they were staying in. We snuck in and met them by the pool. We spend the next few hours sun bathing and trying to figure out how to get a new drivers licence or proof of licence for oz in a few days. We said goodbye to our new friends mid afternoon and headed to the train station. We caught an overnight train back to Bangkok, this time we had the upper berth but we were both pretty comfy and after a ridiculous brass alarm clock we headed off to sleep pretty early.
Monday 1st Feb
We arrived in Bangkok nice and early. We stored our bags at the train station and headed off to explore the capital city. Jay navigated us through the city, taking a bit too much of a backstreet shortcut for my liking but we arrived safely at our first stop, The Reclining buddha. The grounds were incredible, full of
golden statues and monuments. The area had a really calm and peaceful feeling, obviously interrupted somewhat by the dozens of Chinese tourists taking 50 photos by each buddha in a range of interesting positions.
The reclining Buddha was obviously the star attraction, I was asked to wear a very flattering aluminous green dressing gown to cover my shoulders, but it was definitely worth it. The Buddha was massive! 50 meters long and 10 meters tall. We admired the bright golden structure for some time and then wondered around the rest of the grounds. This was probably one of the hottest days we have had at about 35'C, the humidity made it feel much hotter and we were both struggling a little. We took the opportunity to sit in the shade and ended up sitting and taking for ages about our future plans, jobs, houses and just life in general. We have so many exciting plans, I love being married!
Eventually we realised we had our lives to talk but this was a our last day in Bangkok so we headed off to the Grand Palace. We had a look from the outside but the admission price was expensive and we didn't want to get anymore Baht out so we set off to find the famous Koh San road instead. The road was full of backpackers and westerners, but not the wild sordid Bangkok we pictured, maybe you need to wait until nightfall. We enjoyed our last meal in Thailand, delicious right to the end, and headed back to the train station. En route we bought a smoothie each, worth mentioning because they were so flipping tasty and only about 60p. Whist crossed the river we happened to glance in and saw a 2 foot lizard on a log eating his freshly caught fish, it was funny because earlier in the day Jay and I were discussing how much money we would have to be paid to jump into the river (one of many random conversations), but I can tell you we both very quickly upped our figures, especially when we saw a second and larger (4foot) lizard swimming around!
Once back at the station we were both super hot and uncomfortable so we splashes out and paid the 10p to have a shower at the train station. It was freezing cold and wonderful! We made the commute back to the airport and waited excitedly to board our plane to Australia! As soon as we boarded we knew we were going to have a lovely flight. The plane (Emirates) had little LED lights on the ceiling that looked like stars, AND they had wifi. Once we took off we FaceTimed my Dad from 30,000ft!
