Jenn's Trip through Asia
Hello everyone.
Sorry, the photograph situation is getting unbearable. I have just not yet found an internet place I want to spend enough time at to update any more interesting photographs I may or may not have, so I have to rely on the ones StaTravel gies us as a suggestion. Which is why there's now a tuk-tuk for an entry on Vietnam... I've not actually seen any here as yet.
I've made it to Vietnam, yeah!! Had a bit of a very long train journey from Shanghai to Nanning near the Vietnamese border, took 34 hours and felt a bit like being in prison. As a reward, I got to stay in the worst ever hotel room in Nanning... looked a bit like it might have served as a bus stop in a former life.
Was a bit of a hassle getting into Vietnam as well, as these things tend to be. There were 6 Westerners including myself at the border crossing and we decided to share a taxi to Lang Son, the next town, and then get a minibus from there to Hanoi. However... we sort of got kidnapped, driven somewhere else, and then they 'offered' to drive us all the way to Hanoi (190km) for only seven times the price it would have been on the minibus... in the end... there wasn't that much choice involved and we negotiated them down as well. But still. I was not a happy bunny when I arrived.
But Hanoi is great!! In fact, the old quarter is veeery much like Thamel in Kathmandu (in all the good and the bad ways). Which means I've finally had a proper meal, yeah!! I must have lost between 2 and 4 pounds in weight now, I either don't get the chance to eat or I just can't eat anything anymore, it's like I'm no longer used to it.
The other thing about Hanoi is the... ridiculous amount of motorbikes racing around. Traffic rules don't seem to apply to them, they go whether it's red or green and drive on either side of the road... so every time I'm trying to cross the road, I'm faced with about 40 of the things coming towards me on either side... I've stopped looking now, I just walk.
Tomorrow I will be going to Halong Bay, which is supposed to be utterly stunning, I'm just a bit worried about the weather, it's been pouring it down today. And on Sunday I'm off to Hoi An, my next stop on the list.
And now... I'll be making my way back to the Cambodian embassy, to collect a visa I applied for this morning. Which was hilarious... I decided to just 'spot the flag' to find out which building exactly the Cambodian embassy was.. small problem... I've got absolutely noooo idea what the Cambodian embassy looks like. Errrr. Note to self: next time check flags of countries you're travelling to.
Hope you're well everyone,
lots of love
