Sitting waiting at the bus stop for Krabi - half an hour early as you never know with Thai time - a man asked us where we were going and nodded and walked off, we assumed that meant we were in the right place. Obviously not as a few minutes later he came back and told us to follow him up the road to a different bus stop. One bus came and he shouted to us that this was the wrong bus for us so we sat and waited. Shortly afterwards a beeping horn signalled that the bus was arriving and so we hopped on and set off to Krabi. Thai bus drivers seemingly beep their horn every few seconds, we've tried to work out how many beeps means what but its practically impossible! I have since found out that you have to give way to the larger vehicle so maybe they are just signalling others to move.
An hour and a half later we arrived at Krabi bus station and were again hounded by sales people trying to get us to our destination. We agreed to jump in a taxi and head to our accommodation - a junior mountain view suite in a guest house - sounds posh but it was actually the cheapest we could find at around £7 each per night! We had taken a few teaching and Thai phrase books with us using the trip as an excuse to do some lesson planning and learn a bit of Thai - neither of which happened as we spent the next 3 days sleeping and eating! The guest house was lovely and Ao Nang is so beautiful - we dumped our stuff in the room covered ourselves in suncream and headed to the beach which was about a 25 minute walk away down a shallow hill filled with shops and restaurants. Oh and a mosque - the south of Thailand has a largish Muslim population. Having stitches in my foot meant that I couldn't get my foot wet, we had the genius idea of putting a condom on my foot to keep it dry and see if that meant I could go in the sea… it worked for all of 2 minutes but I got to stand in the sea at least! There are all sorts of islands that you can easily visit from Ao Nang, unfortunately you have to get a boat and there is no dock so these were a no go as again I couldn't stand in the sea… next time though! Apart from lots more sleeping and some amazing food we didn't do much else for the 4 days that we were there. We ventured out one evening but it is currently the low season so there weren't many people around or many restaurants or bars open late. One bar that we went to was situated in a square with a sign post to various cities around the world, London wasn't on there, we think its too far! However it did say that we were 648km from Bangkok and it made us realise just how big Thailand is and how many kilometres separated us with some of the other interns that we had spent so much time with in orientation week.
Saturday morning came and it was time to check out and head back to Phrasaeng, we caught a local bus (slightly bigger than a Tuk Tuk but not as big as the 'Truck Truck') back to Krabi bus station and then had to wait 90 minutes for our bus to Phrasaeng. Eventually the bus came, which had to be the hottest and most sweaty bus I've ever been on, and just under two hours later we arrived in Phrasaeng, with headaches from the horn beeping every few seconds!
We then had a couple of days to try and get things done before going to our schools for the first time on Tuesday. We tried to get some laundry done but the lady didn't understand us and so it resulted in a major fail and us spending 2 hours hand-washing 2 weeks worth of dirty clothes in our bathroom! Oh well Mai Pen Rai (a popular Thai phrase meaning nevermind or it doesn't matter)
