Jen's Travel Diary
Wednesday - I set off from 'Las Vegas' at 9.20am taking the bus to 'LA'. I arrived in 'LA' and then waited to catch the train to 'San Diego'. I eventually arrived in 'San Diego' at 7pm. From the train station I walked to the "USA Hostel San Diego", and met Andy on the way. The hostel is in the central "Gaslamp Quarter" of downtown. It is a nice little hostel, with good rooms ($22) and a free breakfast, atrium and travel information. In the evening I met up with Andy and joined the hostels bar crawl. We went to "Star", "Mooses" and another bar that neither of us can remember but they did have a live salsa band who we very good. The drinks were all $1 and we managed to pick up a really nice mexican on the way back. It was such a funny night!!
Thursday - I had a lie in this morning and then me, Andy and Kate (who I met in LA) went to "Lee's" a very traditional American diner for breakfast/lunch. After that we walked down to the harbour, passing the huge Convention Center on the way. The harbour was really pretty so we decided to walk along the whole "Embarcardo" path. We came to "Seaport", a recreated 1800 village, which had little craft shops and cafes. Further down we passed the port and navel base (the biggest in the USA) which had massive ships out front. we also saw the "Star of India", a beautifully rennovated tall ship. Then we walked to "Petco Field", home of the San Diego Padres baseball team. It was a huge modern stadium, but sadly for us the Padres are playing away this week so we could not catch a game. Then in the evening 7 of us from the hostel went to the cinema to watch "Sin City", omg what a great film that was. so different and well shot - I loved it!
Friday - Today Kate and I decided to visit "Oldtown" in 'San Diego'. It was a ride on the blue trolleyline away. It is where the original California was formed and had a Mexican flavour. There were lots of colonial buildings and shops, whcih we wandered around for an hour or so. We then had tacos for lunch. Then in the afternoon we headed to "Ocean Beach" and caught some sun. It was a really nice area with lots of old seaside shops and buildings. It was not the trendy style that California is so famous for. I then had an early night.
Saturday - I fly to New Orleans.
