We arrived in Hong Kong later than expected as flight delayed so it was straight to hotel and bed. Superb hotel and they upgraded our room so even better.
Fortunately we seemed to have left our dodgy stomachs behind, Ray's possibly helped by a large dose of Peptobismol which we obtained in Watkins Chemist in Hong Kong.
In true Tozer style the first thing we had food wise was a large chicken, avocado and toasted cheese sandwich with fries and several glasses of San Miguel beer. It was heaven and not a bowl of rice in sight. We sound like boring British tourists now but the food did get a bit much.
We are staying in Kowloon so we had to catch the ferry across to Hong Kong island and we have been impressed as far as cities go. The central business area is very clean and all the people are milling around in business suits and on mobile phones. The buildings are very impressive and there obviously is a lot of money here. Not the normal smell of the rural Chinese places. Instead of sewers you can smell all the designer female and male fragrances.
We went up to Victoria Peak on the tram which was a bit of a steep ride but well worth it, the views were amazing and would have been even better if not for the low cloud. We had lunch at one of the peak restaurants and it was delicious - huge onions rings and cajun chicken with fries; we have taken photos.
Hong Kong is certainly geared to the designer shopper but unfortunately not suitable for us as we are not designer size!! We were hassled once again by the touts who wanted to make you a suit or a dress in record time but we declined their offers and it got a bit tedious in the end.
Some of the areas in Kowloon are a bit seedy and Thai massages were an option but we declined as we felt nothing could top the one we had in Xian Airport!!
It is quite warm here but the humidity gets to you more so we ended the day by walking along The Avenue of Stars on the waterfront. The only one we knew was Jackie Chan. We also had a few drinks, beer and cocktails and watched an impressive laser light show. The whole Hong Kong and Kowloon skyline was a massive display of dancing lights to music. No worries about the ozone layer here!!
Tomorrow Singapore - keep reading.
