So after an 11 hour bus ride (which actually must have been at least 4 days) we're back in Bangkok, trying to arrange visa's for China and arrange travel to Ko Samet, a secluded island in Central Thailand where Beth has been before and really enjoyed.
The full moon party in Kho Phangan was - well - a party. Lots of extremely loud techno music everywhere, people painted in fluorescent body paint dancing with flaming sticks, stumbling around talking about the universe and love, and squatting in the ocean to pee. Had I been either a pill-popping shroomer or a roudy drunk I probably would have had a blast, but Beth and I were content with wondering around and observing and not going to Thai prison. I'm glad we went, but afterwards we were very relieved to head North to escape the heards of people and get some peace and quiet. We went to a small private beach called Haad Khom with about three bungalow resorts full of mostly Germans and LOTS of thirsty mosquitoes. Our "fan room" was powered with electricty from 8pm to midnight, so the fan really did nothing to help us escape from the 86 degree heat while we attempted to sleep. The North part of the island is full of coral reef so we rented snorkles and masks from our resort and went exploring with my underwater camera case (great gift Mom). We also visited Haad Mai (I think that's what it's called) which is a protected marine part full of playful puppies. Two nights up North were just what we needed before heading back to Bangkok for a few days to sort some things out and get rid of our over-packed, much too heavy bags. We've reduced our load to 4 shirts, 2 pair or shorts, 5 pair underwear, 2 pair socks, sandals, shoes, and toiletries. The rest is being sent home and is totally uneccessary. That's the last time I overpack. Kho San Road is still - well - Kho San Road - bustling with vendors and garbage and great people-watching. Tomorrow we head off to Ko Samet to do some more relaxing.
