Jen's Adventures
Hi!
We're sorry we've taken so long to write! Been very busy.
After The dumpling night in Hue, we went on the perfume river boat tour which was nice though short, then the motorbike tour started.
IT WAS AMAZING! Definately the highlight of the holiday so far.. We went through the country side on the back of a motorbike speeding through the villages and rice fields. Through the narrow streets the little children held their hands up for high fives and all waving and shouting hello..
We made a few stops which was nice for the sore bums!
We went to an "ancient gladiator area".. haha- whatever they called it!- where the village used to gather round to watch elephants fight tigers. They'd cut out the tigers claws before the match and starve them for 5 days as they believed the elephants were a sacred animal. The claw scratchings were still on the walls from the tigers in the waiting rooms!
Another stop was the kindom of an old king. He was buried somewhere in the grounds but because of the Jewels and Gold buried inside, the position has remaind a secret, although there is a monument for him, where the French believed he was buried and tried to dig it up many years ago.
We also stopped at a house where a lady showed us how to make the traditional Connical Hats. Everyone wears them here and they apparently make you look younger while keeping you from the sun. (Pale skin is seen as beautiful in Vietnam).
This lady was born with one arm and it was inspirational to see her weaving and making these hats- she makes hundreds and hundreds every day! We both bought a small one to support her business.
One lady at another part of the tour tought us how to make inscence sticks and we all had a go for ourselves, haha.. yea. It was really fun and all ended up buying one or two things because you can see just how much effort they put into them!
The best part of this trip for me was getting my palm read. It was really funny, but the woman spoke good sense! I'll be married by the time I'm 24 so maybe I should start looking for my specially designed wedding dress here, in Hoi An! She also predicted 5 kids. Wahoooo.. she was a coool lady!
!!!! A lizard just dropped on my hand when I was typing this!!! I jumped up and shouted and everyone looked and laughed.. !! arhghhhh... There are so many lizards everywhere, it's really good but as long as they keep to their walls and ceilings!
Anyway, it was a really fun day and after this we went and had the traditional Vietnamese Pho.. which was broth of beef or chicken, with noodles and the meat, and then you add onions, corriander or whatever else. It was really nice..
We went for cocktails and had a night out with the group with a cyclo ride home.. Tell you stories later.
We arrived in Hoi An Tuesday, after a 4 hour ride through the mountains, where we stopped at our second beach. It was beautiful and deserted. We didn't stay long but was a great impression of Vietnam!
It's a beautiful town but we've done nothing but shop! The tailors are fantastic and are brilliant for making ANYTHING you want and amazing prices! All the girls on our group have been dreaming of clothes since we've got here. Within 24 hours I had a formal gown I had designed myself, fitted exactly how I wanted! Now it's just fitting it all into our bags!
We went to our local beach today, and hired bycicles to get there.
Now a little burnt and very tired but it's a day of travelling tomorrow to Ho Chi Minh City. Another Hectic couple of days with the LOUD beeping and busy people! But we shall see when we get there and let you know everything.
Goodnight and speak to you soon xxxxxxxxxx
