Had a truly spectacular flight to Swakopmund.
First over the red dunes, and continued over miles of sand. Flew over deserted (ha-ha) diamond mining camps in the middle of nowhere, straight west to the coast and then north. Passed 2 seperate shipwrecks, the one from 1909 now easily 500m from the coast. Also saw colony after colony of seals and loads of flamingoes near the salt flats. Probably the most scenic flight I have ever been on. All up the coast, nothing but water to the west and sand to the east. Sometimes rising dramatically 80m. That's one Jesus-big beach!!! Crossed the Tropic of Capricorn enroute.
Now kicking back in this very German of towns. Cake and coffee at four, and eating lots of oryx (striploin and meatballs), springbok (filet) and ostrich (stroganoff). Haven't been up before the sun in 3 whole days!
Went quad-biking on the dunes for a couple of hours today. It was lots of fun and the scenery was breathtaking, but I'm hard pressed to figure out why people spend large amounts of their leisure time doing that. I'm good for a few years now.
We leave tomorrow, thru Joburg, p/u our left luggage for a late arrival in Capetown.
Sorry the past few blogs have been a bit long winded. Wi-Fi is rare and intermittent, so it's been easier to cut and paste from my journal. Then I was too lazy or busy to edit. I'll aim to be more concise and pithy in the future.
Hope it's not too cold there and that all is well. I also hope Brisbane is still there for us on 27 Jan!
