Around the World Forever
After seeing the Perito Moreno Glacier yesterday, we had enough of the over-priced, over touristed, and just plain boring city of El Calafate. We decided we couldn't take anymore paying so much to get so little in return. The only reason to come here in the first place is to see the glacier, which was great, but we need to do something until Doug's plane leaves on Monday. So we cut our stay short, checked out, and hopped on a bus to Chalten at the last minute. It's cool little town with a sort of hippy vibe to it but also the place to come see Cerro Fitz Roy, one of the most recognized and photographed mountains on the planet. This would be our only chance to see it so off we went. It's a simple day hike to the view point for photos and we got lucky with some pretty good weather. We checked into our simple but weird hostel late Saturday night. When I asked the owner if we needed to sign in and register our passports he just said "Why?" Now this is a laid back place. We liked it immediately. However, like anyplace in the world where you would least expect it, crazy and dangerous things do occur. While we were enjoying our HUGE dinner of Patagonian lamb, fillet mignon, beef loin, sausage, and ... yuk, tripe(intestines... no one touched that) the local police and fire department were dispatched to coax a stray horse from the middle of the road. How exciting!
Well, from here Doug and I go back to El Calafate and then he flies home. I go ... ummm, I have no idea... north I suppose. Where else is there to go. One thing is for certain, I need to spend more time in Chile......
