"I've been in Perth for too long! It's time for another adventure!" This was the thought in my head as I headed off to Mauritius. Although I'm going to Mauritius to run training for 2 weeks, I've added some extra time on at the start to go roaming around the wilds of nearby Reunion.
It's an island that's basically one giant volcano crater and is now covered in lush vegetation.
My flight from Perth was all fine. One benefit of the Coronavirus is that fewer people are travelling at the moment so I had a spare seat next to me for the whole trip!
Fortunately, the Perth airport guys were able to check my bag all the way through to Reunion so I didn't need to go through customs then come back in again. When I arrived in Mauritius, I just went straight to the lounge & enjoyed their hospitality. It was a very nice lounge too as it was the Air Mauritius one!
The 4-hour wait for my flight to Reunion seemed to take forever and I was fighting to stay awake for a fair bit of it. Despite my near-sleep state, I managed to get quite a lot done however & ticked a few items off my todo list.
I'm pretty sure I slept for some or maybe even most of the 45 min flight from Mauritius to Reunion as it seemed to go by quite quickly. Not surprising that I slept - it was about 3 am Perth time when we landed.
Got some more cash at the St Denis airport, then grabbed one of the famously expensive Reunion taxis to take me to my hotel. Surprisingly there aren't many taxis waiting at the airport - maybe they've priced themselves out of the market!
The hotel I picked was only about 15min from the airport and judging by the late-night bars and "entertainment" we passed, it was in a somewhat seedy part of town but the room itself was clean, quiet and comfortable and that's all that really matters.
Although the night porter didn't speak much English & my French is very limited, we managed to figure everything out.
I unpacked the bare essentials then flopped down into the bed just before midnight (about 4am Perth time). It had been a big day!
