Jeff Robson's Travels
- Woke up at 3.15am due to train horns! Checked out of my hotel, leaving my clothes to be washed plus a bag of other bits and pieces with them.
- Started from the car park right outside my hotel. Lots of people sleeping in the car park as they have nowhere else to go.
- Extremely long drive from Haridwar to Govindghat. 330 km took 12 hours!
- Stunning mountain scenery with Amazing waterfalls, tiny farms, huge ravines carved by the rivers, landslides all over the place, part of the road was frequently washed away (piles of rocks to warn you), huge drop-offs straight down, tiny brightly coloured villages set amongst the green hills, water everywhere, rubbish too
- Crazy driving: beep horn then just overtake, even on blind corners. Pushes people out of the way.
- Followed the Ganga Rover for most of the trip
- Very auspicious when two larger rivers merge apparently
- Lucky I wasn't driving as I would have been stopping every 5 min to take photos
- Drove straight through, only stopping for breakfast (potato paratha), lunch (Thali set) and afternoon tea (tea). Only other stops were to let vehicles pass!
- Had phone signal almost to the end surprisingly!
- They loved trying to teach me some Hindi words & also liked my music in the van
- Govindghat is tiny with just one street, a few houses, & some shops (from what I can see)
- Hotel we're staying in is very basic: 3 guys in one room (2 of us in one bed - we shared the mattress but not the blankets!)
- Had our trek briefing after dinner with lots of do's & don'ts. Hope we remember them all! Hope I don't get high altitude sickness!
- They checked everyone's O2 levels & heart rate. They said mine was good & that I was very fit ... hope so!
