Hello Poppets! I have to start with that because I am now a London local!
But first, wowee! A lot has happened since my last blog. In future I will have to be more diligent with my journal as this trip is turning into one big blur and it's so easy to forget things when everything is so new and exciting!
So, we had a couple more days in Singapore, seeing the sights. And sights there are plenty-lots and lots of walking, trains, walking, occasional bus trip, more walking etc - you get it!
Clarke Quay was a highlight. It was right on the Singapore River and had the wackiest buildings I have ever seen. It was literally like setting foot on the set of a modern day Flinstones movie! The whole thing was a blur of colour and lights and high priced food and beverages! So of course, in true backpacker's style, we just had the one beer and it was back to China Town for the $1 prawn dumplings for dinner!
We also did a trip to San Tosa Island. It was another wacky expedition! It's a little island-we got a monorail over there that had all different mini theme parks, shows, tours etc. An Asian money makers dream! Thousands of little black heads running a muck everywhere. It was actually pouring rain at the time we were there so Court's this is for you, I just had to embrace the frizzy hair and roll with it. Meanwhile Tim looking like a model freshly out of some ocean shoot and me some kind of electrocuted male LION! Me = King of the desert - not so much!!
By day 3 in Singapore we were thoroughly worn out. At the start of the trip, we made a rule that instead of using the escalators at train stations, we would always use the stairs (there are stairs by the hundred-literally) But by day three however, with tired legs, blisters and expanding tummy's, the escalators soon became the preferred option!
Next up was the flight to London. Once again, it was long.. very long.. But not too bad! We had nice food again and watched movie after movie! We didn't even need ipods! My feet swelled to the size of bowling balls-not even exaggerating! I managed to squeeze them into my little ballet flats but there was plenty of excess skin bulging out of every seam, threatening to burst my shoes open! If we are looking for the positives however, my shoes now fit perfectly-they were a little tight at the start of the trip but a few hours with the Princess Fiona (Shrek) feet and they're sensashe!
So we hop off the plane at Heathrow and jump on yet another train. The trip on the train to Piccadilly was really pretty. There were wildflowers everywhere! Yellow, white, pink & purple lined the train tracks - was a lovely welcome. I don't think Tim appreciated the sweetness of it-think he was just worried he was going to get his usual bout of hay-fever! Once we arrived at Piccadilly Station, our home for the next 3 nights, we walked, very slowly, around trying to find our hostel - for once Tim couldn't get there in two seconds flat like he has for every other destination! He had pussing blisters, I had feet that felt (and looked) like tree trunks but we struggled on - Tim quite often carrying his massive backpack as well as wheeling my wheely-bag at the same time. How good are boyfriends hehe!!
Our first morning in Piccadilly was so fun. We went for a stroll early in the morning then sat at Starbucks with a Latte & hot chocolate and took in all the things Piccadilly has to offer! We felt so um, London-ish! There are heaps of beautiful, grand theatres in this area. Just like the ones on the movies!! With spectacular lights, massive glittering posters advertising the latest production and lots of colour! Very impressive! Too bad we can't afford to watch any performances!!
The buildings are also just what you would expect in London. Very grand and beautiful and everything is clean! The people are all racing at a hundred miles an hour and the roads are hectic with traffic. Cute little, old school taxis buzz around, horns-a-honkin! You often get to hear a bit of road-rage, rather amusing.
Piccadilly Backpackers is our hostel at the moment - lucky we are only here 3 nights is all I can say! If you love your 'roomies' getting home at all hours then turning lights on and drunken chit-chat, laughing & crying, then you are quite welcome to have our room! It's not all bad, it has quirky painted walls with pictures of penises, fanny's and boobs (immature but we still laugh), fun staff and 3 pound breakfasts!! But Emma & Benny's couch sounds much more inviting right now!!
I think a good word to describe Piccadilly is a circus. You can people watch for hours and see some truly odd stuff. Girls have the nicest clothes, and are so stunning. How can they eat so many yummy pastries & hot chocolates and still be skinny?? I am a little shocked at the quality of boys in this city, very average, but Smiz assures me this area is just a little peculiar but we love it.
We went for a wonder around the streets yesterday. I'm stoked I left my bag at home with all my warm stuff in it?? Not. It's so chilly!! Tim has very kindly donated one of his big jumpers to me as has Emma so my chin doesn't chatter so badly now! We found a little park too which was pretty. There are quite a few little parks which is nice because it helps to break up all the concrete of the city.
The weather has been pretty dull since we have been here-apparently. We thought it was like this all the time! But everyone has informed us, it rarely rains but is usually overcast but often breaks of sunshine. We somehow managed to bring the rain, much to the girl's disappointment!
So, highlight of London so far…..?
Catching up with Smizzy, Emma & Benny!!! I was so excited, (Fletcher) I couldn't breathe! But literally!! I actually cannot describe how ecstatic I was to FINALLY see them both at the same time! Even got teary upon arrival!! The trio is back with avengence! Look out London Town! So they too us to dinner at Bodean's (I think?!) which is famous for its ribs so of course everyone bogged into those - I however chose a little burger whish was finger-lickin amazing! Tim proceeded to eat so many ribs he was ill, as did Smar!! They both put in a top effort and left feeling thoroughly ribbed out. We also had a few too many beverages and woke this morning with sore heads and craving bacon and eggs. And for 3 pound, who wouldn't!!
So today Tim and I are off on a walking tour of Piccadilly. And tomorrow our little crew, Smiz, Emma, Benny, Tim & I are off house hunting! We are going to be roomies - all very excited at the prospect! It is bitter sweet though as next week Tim and I leave for the next stage of our adventure, cruising Croatia!! There shall be no teeth-chattering there, can't wait for the sunshine!!
Ok, that is all I shall write.. Did you think it was ever going to end? Maybe I should look into novel writing?? But I had to do a lot of catching up ok so I promise I will have more, not so lengthy, entries!!
Till next time Jxxx
