Not In Kansas Anymore
So much for having a restful day. After the sun came out, I heard the beach calling my name. So, I thought I'd just step outside and take a quick picture.
Well, I did that, and then decided I had to see it up close and in person! It was quite chilly so I changed clothes and asked Gary & Mandy how to get back from the beach without having to walk up the steep, steep hill. They made several suggestions--one of which was taking the coastal path into St Ives and taking a taxi back.
There is a little wooded path just across the street from the B&B that heads straight down toward the beach. It is a very, very steep hill. Not too bad going down but I'm not going to attempt it going up.
Once I got on the beach, I walked to the water's edge. The sand is very fine. I so wanted to take off my shoes and grind away the callouses on my heels. But, I didn't have anything to sit on and didn't want to get my clothes dirty. I did, however, stick my hand in the water and it was surprisingly warmer than I expected.
After taking a few photos and enjoying the view, I decided to start my way to St. Ives on the coastal path. I was told it was a beautiful walk and it truly was.
But, the first 10 - 15 minutes was a grueling uphill hike. I'm glad I didn't turn back. Some people coming toward me on the path from St Ives said that this was the worst part and the rest was easy. So, I continued.
I took lots of pictures from the path and definitely took my time. It was a long walk but worth it. I didn't feel as sore or as tired as I had been feeling like in London.
Once I got to St. Ives, I just decided to wander around and see what I could see. Unfortunately, a lot of the shops and restaurants were closed because it was Sunday and the tourist season hasn't really started up. I'm sure if I go back this week, I will find more shops open.
About 5:15 I decided to look for a place to eat since St Ives would be my best bet for getting some dinner. I was craving pizza and found a little place on the wharf that served all kinds of things like pizza, paninis and crepes. I ordered a small pizza. It was a wood fired pizza with a nice, thin, crisp crust and was really delicious! I also had a bottle of diet coke. That's one thing I hate about the UK. There is no such thing as a fountain drink with a free refill anywhere! So, you have to sip slowly and make it last throughout your whole meal. Or buy another bottle.
It was a little too chilly for me to eat outdoors so I chose to eat in. Another thing I don't like about the UK--you are charged more to eat in and charged less to "take away".
But, I still had a good view of all the people passing by.
Before I left, I asked the girl who worked there where I could find a taxi rank. English was not her first language and it was very difficult for her to give directions and for me to understand her. At one point she mentioned the pound store and it dawned on me that that was like a dollar store in the US! LOL
I got enough information, I thought, that I'd be able to find the taxi rank but I wasn't quite ready to go back to Carbis Bay, so I continued walking. I went up and down streets, up hills, down hills, around and every which way. I really want to go back when it is more bustling. As luck would have it, I stumbled upon Hicks Court which I'd seen mentioned once and had seen a photo but had never been able to find the reference again. I had no idea where it was but just stumbled upon it. Happiness!! I have no idea if this George Hicks is an ancestor, but he could very well be.
Eventually, I got tired of wandering and decided I should start heading back. I passed a little co-op that had cold bottles of Diet Pepsi so picked one up for my evening beverage.
I somehow found my way to the taxi rank and was shuttled back to my B&B. My taxi driver had once lived in Brooklyn, NY and also Austin, TX. He was an older hippie type. When I told him I was from Kansas City, he asked if that was the Midwest. I said yes. He seems to think that we all drive F-150 pick up trucks! LOL He was very nice.
I couldn't believe that the fare came to £6!! From now on, I will figure out the bus system and do that instead! I have no idea if their taxi fare system is regulated or not.
So, what was going to be a non-eventful day turned out to be a really great day after all! I feel a lot better even though I'm still congested. But, I think I'm finally on the mend. Don't know what I'll do tomorrow but might take the double-decker open air bus around the peninsula. It's a hop on/hop off service that runs all day. I'll be able to see lots of beautiful countryside.
Gary & Mandy say that the weather this week is supposed to be really nice, so I'm very happy about that. It's too bad that the mornings are kind of foggy/cloudy and the sun doesn't shine until later. But, I'll take it.
It is very humid here. I hate humidity. We do not get along at all.
