Day 70
Arrived in Melbourne late afternoon, we hadn't booked anything but knew a few people who we had met in Alice who were staying at Nomads so decided to go there. Its so easy getting from the airport to the city as there is a bus 'skybus' that runs every 20 minutes which takes you to a bus terminal and from there you get a smaller bus which takes you straight to your accommodation. We paid $26 each return. We have found the dorm rooms very expensive on oz and were very tempted to try and get a private room but just wasn't worth parting with the $130 that they were asking for! Melbourne city operates a free tram around the main city centre which is great, and will save us a small fortune in travel. We had a quick trip out on the tram this evening but plan to have a proper look tomorrow.
Day 71 & 72
Went for a look around town yesterday and found a great outlet shopping centre called Harbour Town. We did spend a bit of money which we probably shouldn't have done but we needed a couple of things so thought we would take advantage of the January sales. Later we took a walk to the MCG, just next to the ground is the venue of the Australian Open tennis and there were lots of practise courts set up, you could see some of the players practising from the bridge but we were too far away to make out any of the players. That evening we went to the library to use the Internet as we couldn't face sitting in McDonald's (the only other place with free Internet).
Today we went to Victoria Market which is right on our hostels doorstep, it was great there were loads of stalls with things like clothes, souvenirs, and lots of fresh food. Didn't have too long in the market as we had booked to go on the 'Neighbours' tour this afternoon! Before the tour started one of the old cast members 'Sky' came to introduce herself to the tour, everyone had a chance to take photos and get autographs (we have attached our to the blog). The tour takes you around part of the studios where Neighbours is filmed, and Ramsey Street of course. Ramsey St is actually called 'Pin Oak' and is a small cul-de-sac road. We got photo's out side the Kennedy's house, Harold and Madge's old house and lots more. You can't go into the properties as they are all owned by residence, but was still funny to be up so close. On our way back from Ramsey Street we asked the bus to stop at St Kilda's, a little beach town in Melbourne. St Kilda's is semi famous for its fantastic cake shops along the sea front so we made sure we had time for a indulge in Chocolate cake ha,ha.
We are leaving Australia tomorrow for New Zealand. Our first stop is Auckland before picking up our campervan and traveling both the north and south Islands. Not long until we are home again and enjoying the delights of English weather :(
