Jan's Travels
Before arriving in Rotorua, we stopped off at Waitomo Caves. Kar and I went for the Haggas Honking Holes caving expereince. We had to be suited and booted first becasue we were going to get wet! Got to wear lovely white gum boots. Sexy! We got to abseil 3 underground waterfalls, crawl through tiny holes in the caves in mud and water, do some rock climbing and see lots of glow worms. It was excellent fun. We were about 100 metres underground at most points abseiling - how surreal? The waterfalls were cool and the guides made it worse by kicking water at us, at some points you had no idea where you were. They got us to turn our lights off at one points, hung us over the edge of a drop and dumped us in a pool of water! Crawling through some of the tight spots was very claustrophobic!!!
Arrived in Rotorua to a lovely smell - the thermal pools all around stink of rotten eggs! Stayed in hotrocks backpackers which as it's own hot swimming pool ,tried that out a couple of times!
Met George from Lauder again and went zorbing, which means rolling down a hill in an inflatable ball which has a wee bit of hot water in. All three of us went together which was a great laugh, laughed all the way to the bottom. Had no idea where I was half the time.
Had our first expereince of hitch hiking back fro mt eh zorbing, first camper van in sightt george was out flaggin them down, easy as!
With a bit of a hangover which probably wasn't a good idea we went white water rafting the next day. We did the most dangerous commercially available white water raft experience, which involves a 7m drop waterfall!!!! Agisan the guides were great and talked us through, we were only on the water for 40 minutes but managed lots of waterfalls and drops. the 7m one was very scary, not sure if George's alcohol breath conked me out or I shut my eyes, either way we made it. From the photos you can see we are under the water but it didn't feel like that at all. We also got to do some water surfing. The guides jammed us in the waterfall and the water poured over the top on top of whoever sat in teh front, needless to say Karen and I both had a go.
The final adrenelin activity was the Swoop. It's a cross between a hand glider and a giant swing adn bungy. We were strapped into hand gliding out fits and hoisted 40m into the air by a crane and then i had to pull a cord to release us. It took me about a minute of the boys shouting beloew to pull it before I could, too scared. It felt really high. When i pulled it we did a bit free fall and then the swing kicked in and we were gliding through the air, great fun!
So all in all a great time in rotorua!
