Further south in Mexico, we stopped for a few days in San Cristobal in the region of Chiapas, arriving on Jansen's birthday. They clearly got the memo that there was something to celebrate as we spent the day surrounded by celebrations, parades, fireworks, music, drunkards and partiers. We happened to be in the area during the Autumn equinox celebrations. With some dumb luck we made a day trip out to the indigenous town of Chamulla to be surprised by a huge festival dedicated to the event. It was the town's third biggest festival and, for towns that have festivals as much as these ones, that's saying something. Marches and fireworks seemed to be the order of the day, as we discovered the Mexicans really like to celebrate, dangerously, with explosions.
