Nella's spanish and european aventures
So on tuesday last week we went with the school (we technically had the day off for an andalucian holliday so we took a fieldtrip instead.... we just love each other that much). It was really fun. The Rock of Gibraltar is the only little piece of land that the UK owns, Spaniards like to claim it as their own. its so weird because they have their own little weird thing on the straight too, they have two little provinces over on the northern boarders of Africa becasue they were all always competing to control the straight. When we got there it was way cool, we got a tourguide that spoke in a mix of spanish and english so that we could all understand what was going on. he was really fun and took us on a mini bus-van thingy up to the top of the rock. First stop, to see the lighthouse that marks the place where the mediterranian and the atlantic split, the straight of Gibraltar and a little bit of the coast of africa!!! we could see it but i doubt youll be able to in the photos. Next we went to see these really cool caves that have these really cool things i can only describe as stone isicles in order to get you to understand. They, just as icicles, dripped water from the top of the cave, only its not ice, its the stone, of the cave walls and ceiling, they hang down to make a beautiful display (well beautiful where there's light that is. they used to use this cave to entertain and have parties occasionally (they being the large military forces of the UK). coarse it's all wet in there but it was cool and really fun to see, unfortunately that is one of the places i will have to remember without the use of photos and one that you will not be able to enjoy since the darkness of the caves did not agree so much with the settings of my camera. what did agree with the camera however, and very well i might add, were the monkeys they are everywhere and you are warned upon arrival to pay close attention to all your belongings because they are good thieves and will steal even an icecream cone or cigarette from someone while they're eating or smoking (unfortunately i did not get to witness that)however they were great fun and we even got to see a few babies with mommy and daddy. they will even pose for pictures if they feel up to it and see you with the camera. then we went back to the bottom and walked around the city center known for having no taxes and therefore cheaper prices, however they take pounds or at least convert them to euros, therefore everything turns out to be around the same price or even more. so we bought only the souveniers of postcards and keychains and then went in to see the chapel where jon lennon was married (no idea why you'd want to be married there it was SO little), we had our fish and chips, a little coffee (that's the thing to do here if ever in doubt of what to do or ever need to kill time you must always go to get coffee.)and then we went back home (after of coarse getting GIBRALTAR stamped on our passports!!!
oh one more thing i must tell you about, the people of gibraltar speak a mix of spanish and english, it was so weird to order, we never knew which language the person prefered, some barely understood english, others were fluent but threw in a little spanish unknowingly... so odd, so fun. we litterally heard a man answer his phone "hello? diga! como estas? good, good thank you. sÃ,sà how about wednesday... bueno gracias, love you hasta luego." SO ODD! SO FUN!!
