We are now in Margaret River. Basically we have gatecrashed Michele and Andy's honeymoon, they had booked an apartment in Margaret River which is about 3 1/2 hours south of Perth and has 120 wineries! 120!!! We stopped en route at a place called Busselton, which has the longest pier in the Southern Hemisphere. It's 2km long and had an underwater observatory at the end of the pier, under the pier, where you can look out into the sea and feel as though you are part of the underwater world. You can either book the guided tour, which involves a train to the end of the pier and back or if you don't mind walking you can just go a long and visit, in between tours, which was what we opted for. The walk up the pier was fantastic, so beautiful, but we had a comedy moment where a black rain cloud followed us up the pier, right above our heads and rained on us. It was weird! Gorgeous sunny weather all around us, apart from this one rain cloud above our heads. Eventually the cloud overtook us so we walked in sunshine the rest of the distance to the end of the pier. The underwater observatory is fab, it's really weird as the first window on the way down is half in and half out of the water and next window down you are under the sea. We didn't get to see any seals, which are often swimming around the pier, but we saw LOADS of fish, including some really big Angel fish. The apartment in Margaret River was great, walking distance into town and with a bbq area and swimming pool and hot tub. Ian had decided he needed to bbq to really feel like he was in Australia so a food shop later and the boys were merrily bbqing. Yum! For some crazy reason, Michele and I decided that we were going to get up at 8am and jump in the pool. I know this is Australia, but it's Autumn and cooler in Margaret River and the pool was not heated...........bl***dy freezing! This early morning freezing dip was NOT repeated! After the icy experience we set off to Cape Naturaliste for a beautiful walk and then............WINE TASTING!! We went to three vineyards and it was absolutely fantastic. Margaret River is famous for it's SBS, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and we tried some really great ones and bought a load of wine to drink back at the apartment too. We fell in love with the 'Vasse Felix' vineyard, which is the oldest vineyard in Margaret River (still only about 40 years old though as it's a relatively young wine region). We decided to go for lunch there the following day and it's one of the most perfect lunch spots EVER! Sat on a wooden balcony, in the glorious sunshine and overlooking vineyards as far as the eye can see. The lunch was absolutely amazing too. Several of the vineyards in Margaret River have top class chefs in their restaurants and 'Vasse Felix' was no exception. Prior to lunch that day we had gone to the cape at the opposite end of the peninsular, Cape Leeuwin. This has the highest lighthouse on mainland Australia, which we went up and is also where two oceans meet, the Southern Ocean and the Indian Ocean. After the lunch at Vasse Felix we went for coffee at a Chocolate factory, perfect! On the Thursday, the day before we were due to leave we visited one of the showcaves in the area in the morning and.......yes you guessed it.........went wine tasting in the afternoon. This time we booked a tour behind the scenes of the Leeuwin vineyard where an Aussie, sporting an excellent moustache, talked through the wine making process and the award winning 'art series' wines, where the owners commission a piece of art every year, which then goes on to their label. The 'Art Series Chardonnay' put Leeuwin and Margaret River on the world wine map and is considered to be the best Chardonnay in the world! Even Ian liked it and he usually hates Chardonnay. The final vineyard of the trip was Xanadu, which meant Michele and i were humming the track from the 80's film of the same name, v annoying. Xanadu were the wines served for Michele and Andy's wedding, so a fitting end to a four day tasting extravaganza! On the final day on the way home we drove past all the wineries but......stopped at two cheese factories and went for ice-cream at Hillary's harbour. I seriously need to diet and detox when I get home. Back to Perth and it was time to say goodbye to Michele and Andy and Perth. One final meal, (I had a Vietnamese dish of chilli red snapper - amazing!) and we were off the following morning to fly up to Darwin to hire a campervan for a week to explore the National Parks of the top end of Australia. Speak soon from Darwin!!!
