Hey!
So Berlin is behind us at last. And it was just a two hour journey to the next stop, Quedlinburg. We had to make one connection but the train ride was really nice. Smooth and efficient. Exactly what you'd expect in Germany. The sites out the window weren't half bad either.
So we arrive in Quedlinburg and it hit us straight away how different this would be from Berlin. We barely came across any English speakers before, but this is far off the beaten trail for any back-packers it seems. But maybe its just the time of year. Either way, people often seem surprised that they have foreign visitors here. What tourists we have seen have all been German themselves.
You'll see from the recent photo album that this is a gorgeous city. It seems that there are some areas that aren't so pretty, but we've kept ourselves in what appears to be the old historical part of the city. It must be the original town centre. A lot of very old and tall churches and a large hill in the middle with a castle on top (which is very impressive).
The weather is still gorgeous, but it's a bit windier here than it was in Berlin, so not quite T-shirt weather. Still, we had a good picnic in the park and bathed in the sun for a few hours.
The hostel's nice too. Everything is very traditionally German. We're getting a good feel for how it is in the Harz area. It does seem a little harder to get cheap food though. Hostel wasn't incredibly cheap either. It looks like some of the guest houses have better rates. So when we move over to Goslar tomorrow we'll shop around a little more and try to get the best deal. Kate is quite worried about the money issue, which is fair enough. But we're having a great time. And we got enough to last a good deal longer.
I'll update again as soon as possible after Goslar and hopefully a day-trip up the highest mountain in the Harz.
Time to look Quedlinburg up on the net and find out a thing or two about the history of this place!
