We drove down to Bruny Island with Norm, once again, in the big orange van. We had to get the ferry from Kettering, which takes about 15mins or so. Once on Bruny, we drove from the north of the island to the south, stopping at quite a few places along the way that were nice spots, or had a nice lookout. The population of Bruny is about 500, so you feel quite isolated down there.
We went to Norms 'shack', then went down to his own personal beach! Amazing white sand and clear blue seas with not a person in sight! It look like something from a travel brochure or a postcard. We had a swim there, then relaxed at Norms and had a nice chilli con carne. At about half 9 when it was pretty dark we went for a drive up to the isthmus connecting the north and south islands. There we saw fairy penguins, the smallest of the penguin. Every night at dark they walk from the sea, up the beach and burrow in the grass. At the same time as seeing this we saw hundreds of shearwater birds flying above us and burrowing around with the penguins! It was crazy, like nothing we had ever seen before.
The drive back was even more eventful where we saw loads of wallabies hopping about by the side of the road...including an albino one.
The following day we drove over to Chirstinas house on the other side of the island. Her house is set on a beach in a really remote area of the island. We drop off some bits there, and set off again with Norm to a do a bit more of a tour of the island. We saw some more incredible beaches and rugged coastlines and even got our first sighting of an Echidna, (probably my favourite of the aussie animals so far) similar to a very large hedgehog...but much cooler!
We spent the night at Christinas, and had a lovely meal. We also picked our own starter by going down to her beach and collecting a load of mussels. As night came the fields around the house became surrounded by loads and loads of wallabies! It was like having you own nature show in your garden. It was a little unnerving though when you had to go outside to the toilet, in a little shack in the garden, seeing a load of eyes looking back at you when you shine the torch and knowing theres also a possum practically sitting next the front door.
We spent the next morning helping Christina putting up fence in her garden, then caught an afternoon ferry back over to Kettering and drove to Norm's Hobart house. We spent the evening playing cards and ended it watching a kiwi film called 'Black Sheep'.
