The day started in the dark as we arose from our beds at 4am. Our flight was delayed by about an hour so James and I napped on the seats, a bed we have gotten used to over the past two years! Chris had gone to ask when our flight was due to leave and all of the signs were displayed 'Delayed'. Suddenly over the airport sound system, there was an announcement for passengers in the party of Christopher Wiper. We had almost missed boarding, we sprinted to the desk and got shoved onto the bus, it was such a close call and slightly embarrassing as everybody on the bus had been waiting for us! To top off our embarrassment we were laughing about the close call when Chris mocked the announcer's accent in a loud voice 'Kwis-toe-fa Why-paa', obviously we were surrounded by people who probably had a similar accent when speaking English. James and I held our heads down and tried not to acknowledge our association!
The early morning flight from Hoi An meant our first day in Saigon was taken at a relaxed pace-well to some extent! Gail had surpassed herself with a huge apartment on the outskirts of the city. The apartments offered complimentary transportation into District 1. Not just your average car or bus but a speed boat! It was so much fun, we felt like characters from James Bond. We wandered around the main high street for a bit and chose a delicious Vietnamese restaurant for a spot of lunch. James and I convinced G&C that we should go back to the apartment for a rest. I had a long sleep in the room (the spare room) and the Wipers made use of the pool area, and had a nap I am sure!
Rex's bar was the spot for tonight, after some booking confusion, so we got dressed in our Sunday best and headed into the city. Rex's bar is in a great location and you can tell why it was so popular with the Americans during the 'American War', you don't call it the Vietnam War in Vietnam. The cocktails and food were good and the night was going swimmingly until the live music started. We had no complaints with the music itself, it was pretty good, but the volume was deafening, you couldn't hear yourself think. We ate our dinner Jamemily style and caught the last boat back.
