Shuttle Launch and Cocoa Beach, 14th - 16th May 2010

So we raced down the East Coast to Orlando to see the Space Shuttle launch on Friday 14th May. The shuttle programme is being shut down this year, and there are only 3 scheduled this year including this one.

We hired a car and drove down to Titusville. We passed through a town called Abbey Wood - where Selena's originally from, although the London version, and believe it or not there was also a town called Christmas!! :)

We got down to Titusville, parked the car and walked over to the Indian River Bank. It was busy but not packed so was real easy to find somewhere to stand. It was so hot and we lyed there sunbathing for an hour before the launch.

People were listening to their radios and doing a count down as to when it was going to take off. Then all of a sudden we saw a large cloud of white smoke forming on the ground that was getting bigger and bigger and then we saw the shuttle take off. It moved so quickly, and it was so pretty. The sky was really blue, the flames from the rockets were really bright, and it was leaving behind the biggest vapour trail I've ever seen. After it had been in the sky for about a minute, people on the ground were shouting "wait for the boom - it's coming" and then all of a sudden we heard it - the boom from the rockets. It kept climbing for just over another minute and then the rockets separated from the shuttle.You could see small black dots leave the shuttle and start falling back to earth. These land in the ocean and the recovery vessels are already in position to recover them.

It was over really quickly, but it's something I will never forget. I still can't believe we got to see a shuttle launch!

We stayed in Cocoa Beach for a couple of nights, started work on our tans and chilled out before heading to Miami for 4 nights.
