Hello!!
Sorry it has been over a month since the last one, you have to pay for internet at the hostel and I haven't bought any yet so I haven't been able to upload a new blog!
I can't remember everything that has been done over the past month so I'm just going to highlight the best parts of Melbourne as we leave tomorrow to go to Cairns to do our farm work! Banana picking. Going to be a lot of hard work!!!
So to start with me met a guy called Dan on a night out who we get on really well. He lives near to where Will's dad lives so that's how we got talking. We then moved onto stay at Barkly Hostel where pretty much everyone we met at Base came as well purely because we recommended it through the girls! We had a little base family going on haha.
A big highlight of Melbourne is discovering Dairy Milks new rocky road chocolate... Unbelievable! Can't get enough of the stuff haha.
Kat and Lauren had two Canadian friends who were taking them to see the X Factor auditions but they fell ill at the last minute so me and Will got invited to go. Pulled a bit of a prank on facebook, told everyone we were auditioning and a lot of people believed me, especially Mia who was asking loads of questions and believed for a good two hours that I had got through with 4 yes' even though English people aren't allowed to enter! It was a good day!
Me and Dan were sat outside one day waiting for Will when a guy came up to us who stayed in the hostel and said 'excuse me guys are either of you interested in buying a guitar for $50? I bought it for $180 and leave back home to Canada tomorrow so I need to get rid of it. You interested?' Me and Dan jumped at the chance! $25 each... Bargain!!
We played it quite a lot actually, having lots of jams with each other and other people, all the thick skin on the end of my fingers fell off shortly after coming to OZ because I didnt play for so long so it hurt quite a lot haha. Yesterday when we were drinking with everyone in our hostel room a guy called Zander we made friends with noticed it and offered to buy it off us for $50... Made our money back, RESULT!
Easily the biggest highlight of Melbourne was seeing Allen Stone. He's a really small time American Soul singer who was doing 3 shows in the whole of Australia. My plan was to go in Sydney but tickets were $70 so i ruled that out. Decided to tweet him before the show saying 'can't afford a ticket but i hope the show goes well!' he tweeted me back straight away saying 'if you can make it to the show i can put ya on the list' woooooooo i got a free ticket!! I was a bit worried that he would forget or not actually do it so when i turned up and my name wasnt on the list i was fearing the worst, but actually i was on Allen's personal list with 3 other people... No biggie!!
The show was incredible, got some great videos of my favourite songs and some good pictures. His new material was really good as well, can't wait for that to come out.
Been doing a lot of cooking in the hostel with Dan and Lauren making chicken ceaser salads, risottos, spag bol and carbonara. Really enjoy it and it's only about $3 or $4 each!
Been very lucky with the room I was given! I was moved into a new room after a couple of days into room 111 which has 6 people in. I went in and you have to go up some stairs, on one side is a room with 2 bunkbeds and then in another room is two single beds... one was free, yesssssss I didn't have a bunkbed for the first time since leaving home! Happy days. I haven't moved from that room since being in Melbourne so i've always had that bed, for $24 i've got a pretty good deal! The guy in the other single bed is called Brudan Frizzell or something like that. Cool name i know!! He is originally from Manchester and works in a bar called The Lucky Coq (been there twice and he gives me and dan free drinks because we get on well with him) Back home he was a footballer for Hull City playing for the reserves team!! Played for the first team a few times as well before being dropped when they came up to the Premier League. He says he likes it here because where he lives in Hull everyone knows him so he gets recognised a lot whereas here no one knows which he really likes. We're planning on meeting him over in NZ when we go! Dan is thinking of travelling NZ with me and will which would be really fun!
On Easter Sunday i didn't really have any plans. The girls were going to one of there old roommates houses for a Sunday Dinner and i was invited which was nice. About 8 of us sat around a table outside with a giant roast. Absolutely lovely, really enjoyed it and everyone had a good laugh. Nice and homely. We tried to ring Will to get him to come but he was either asleep or his phone was off so he missed out on a cracker!!
We've had a few days work as well for removal companies. We got the number off of Mia's housemate which was good. For the removal company it was $100 a day which was okay saying we got back at about 2 in the afternoon everday. Did about 4 or 5 odd days work for that. We also had work for two interior designers called Phil and Anthony. They were both very nice guys and gave us lots of free food and coffee! Anthony used to tour Australia with the cast of Wicked as one of the main characters (small claim to fame there).
A few nights ago we went to some little bar which we really liked, they had a St Kilda Brew which was really nice. We noticed the barman asking a guy for a photo with someone so we asked who he was and apparently he was a big time comedian in Australia. We had no idea who he was but asked for a picture anyway! Later found out that his name was Peter Rowsthorn and he'd been on quite a few big shows over here. Was really funny because after we'd had the picture with him and didn't know who he was Dan went 'thanks a lot for the picture mate, really like your work, you're really funny'.
Another highlight of Melbourne is getting a few free drinks... Because I look like Prince Harry! Not heard that before... Bar manager downstairs in the hostel has given me a few free drinks now because of it and some people just buy me them on nights out haha I'm not complaining! I imagine as soon as i get my haircut (still haven't decided whether to or not...) all the similarities will go!
Just last night I had 6 people say it to me, 2 of which wanting a picture with me, another guy wanting a picture with me because I look like Ron Weasley... Absolutely ridiculous.
What i've really enjoyed about the hostel is the trivia nights on monday nights they're always a good laugh! First one I alone got 18/18 on the music round! There are free jugs in between the rounds where jugs are up for grabs, won one of them buy having to get an oreo from my forehead down to my mouth without using my hands... Did it in 10 seconds!!
The first week we entered we came 3rd, second week we came 4th, 3rd week we came second ($50 bar tab for the following friday woo) and then the final one before leaving we absolutely destroyed it winning the whole thing by 6 points! Only got 6 questions in the whole quiz wrong out of a possible 61! $100 bar tab for last night which went down a treat.
I also won another prize inbetween the rounds. This one was a drinking one. Had to drink a drink which contained orange juice, maple syrup and 2 raw eggs all mixed together then place the cup upside down on your head. 3, 2, 1 GO! BOOOOOOOM opended up my gullet and chucked it down and placed it on my head in less than 3 seconds the judges hadn't even got their eyes down the line before I had finished. Won a free jug, a round of shots, a night at a neighbours quiz thing worth $40 (hosted by an actor in Neighbours) and also a trip of the Great Ocean Road worth $150!!! I was buzzing! I also had maple syrup all in my long luscious locks... lovely.
Unfortunately we weren't able to do the neighbours night because we are leaving the day before we can use it... Oh well, never watched neighbours anyway haha.
What is annoying though is that I can't do the great ocean road!!! We went to book it for the day before we leave but the shop shut on one of the days we went and then the next day we found out that it was fully booked... Nooooooooo!!
Welllllll that's the majority of the interesting things that have happened in Melbourne, i do like it here but definitely not as much as Sydney!! Sydney is my Australian home and will take a lot to be beaten!
I'll see if i can upload blogs from Innisfail which is where our farm is, fingers crossed they have wi-fi so i can!!
Hope everything is going well for people at home!
