Today we make our way further south investigating a few stops on route.
By 4pm we have pulled up to Willow Rest, a free camp spot that appears to be really popular and dominated by motor homes. It has spotless portaloos, thank god, and a huge fireplace area for us to build our own fires. We have firewood left from last night and Matt intends to cook up jackets potatoes, BBQ chicken and courgettes most of which has been precooked bar the jps - all to a chucked on the fire.
We camp near Mick and Shirley They are a really lovely elderly Australian couple and we sit in the sun chatting away about our trip and their holiday to Eden. Soon more people join keen to get in on the fire action as Mick has one going also for his pork stew.
By 7pm there are 9 of us having great craic around the fire, we are the only foreigners the rest being nationals and they are all so welcoming and friendly. Our dinner is amazing, Matt's very proud. As the beer flows and the night goes on our friendly campers do get quite competitive with each other - who's motor home is bigger etc it's entertaining to say the least and the battle for the floor contines through the night.
By about 12am after the introduction of 40% schnapps which has made the rounds and everyone is pretty merry and next we know we're sat singing the chorus of Waltzing Matilda over and over with our new Aussie mates around a campfire - it's hilarious and no one of us, not even the Aussies, know the words. Matt strums a few tunes but his audience is perhaps too mature for his repertoire and it's curtains.
