Although I had never expected to go to Argentina, a chain of events during carnival made me change my plan to visit the salt lakes in Bolivia and go further south instead. Firstly I heard rumours of strikes happening around Bolivia, and though when I tried to confirm this, I couldn´t find anything, I did discover that the salt lakes were completely flooded and going there would only be half the experience it´s supposed to be and a bit underwhelming. Also, there was a bit of an anti gringo sentiment directly after carnival. When trying to buy an alarm clock, the owner of the stand was increadably reluctant to sell it, claiming not to have any when they were clearly on display. With these in mind, I ended up in Salta after over a day spent on trains and buses. Not having a hostel in mind was seeming like a problem, arriving in Salta around midnight, but thankfully, while getting off the coach, I was given details about a hostel and also a free taxi ride there. Although the hostel is very nice, it was not featured in the travel guides, meaning I was the only english person in the hostel. The next day in Salta, I met some Argentinians (one was studying english at university, which made things slightly easier) in the hostel and we went to Salta´s biggest tourist attraction, which is just a hill with a gondala to get to the top and many stairs back down. I am now going to be heading of to Buenos Aires and possibly learn spanish there.
