With the first leg of our travels complete we thought it only time to make our first post on our blog. We have just arrived in Kuala Lumpur, after a five hour bus journey from Singapore where, when we finally worked out the location of where we were staying, we had a great time.
The flight from the UK was delayed by an hour making the time on the plane that bit longer, however a combination of Indiana Jones and The Edge Of Love and some well needed sleep helped to make 13 hours pass quite quickly.
On arrival the heat hit us even at 7 in the evening. It is monsoon season in Singapore and although, as you will see from the photos, we avoided any rain, it was extremely humid.
So on arrival at our first hostel, (not much to write home about to be honest), we both went out to explore and before we knew it we ended up in the Red Light District, the only Westerners to be seen.
After a plate of noodles, there it was time to hit the bunk beds for the first time in 22 years or so, we were meant to have an early start for exploration the next day.
10.30 am on Wednesday and jet lag had meant we both slept in three hours later than we wanted to. We rushed over to the metro station across from our hostel and straight into the beautiful city centre - Raffles Place. It was a lovely sunny day with barely a cloud in the sky as we made our way down the beautiful Singapore river, a complete contrast to the night before.
We ended up in Chinatown, which looked crazy during the day, and we will pay it a visit in the evening when we return to Singapore after Bali to see how mad it is. After a look around, and having taken in some bizarre smells especially the fruit Durian - banned from all airports and train stations due to the stench, we headed back on the ultra clean and efficient metro service heading to Singapore Zoo and Night Safari.
If we were homesick in anyway - it was so good to see so many relatives at the Zoo. Seriously, it is the best zoo in the world - from Polar Bears through to Crocodiles followed by the night safari, where the nocturnal animals come out to play. Jackie was not the biggest fan of the gum bats enclosure where they literally fly around your head, and at one stage a Rhino looked as if it was going to charge at our tram.
And that takes us through to today. An early start to catch the luxury coach, and 5 hours later we are in Kuala Lumpur and ready to explore. Our hostel in KL seems very nice, it has a real bohemian feel, shoes off at all times! We have a private room with our own bathroom this time, a real treat.
This evening we are going to explore the city by night then it's an early rise again tomorrow morning to get the limited free tickets to go up the Petronas Towers..
Will update again really soon, hope you enjoy the photographs.
Lots of love,
J&S
