Contrary to popular belief, the Garden of Eden isn't located between
the Tigris and Euphrates. It's down in good old Guatemala.
And it goes by the name Semuc Champey. This Garden of Eden is a series of terraced
waterfalls that travel a mile or so down the Cahabon River. At the base of
each cascade there are these wonderful swimming holes, each with varying
size and depth. At one point our guide Pedro tied a rope to a rock and we
shinnied down a bleeding 40 foot cliff with water flowing over our heads.
About half way down we stopped on a big rock and went into a cave behind the
waterfall. It scared the hell out of me, but since everyone else went down I
wasn't to be the chicken.

 
Semuc Champey is about an eight hour bus ride from Guatemala City, so we took a
comfortable Pullman, or Greyhound type bus. They even have reserved seating.
We occupied two of the three seats in the last row. Very comfortable,
except they sold the seat beside us to three people.
