Well I am a little black and blue but I survived my week of skiing in Austria.
The week didn't start too well when I decided to have a few Christmas drinks with my flatmates on Saturday night, before I knew it, it was an hour before I had to leave and I hadn't even packed! I stuffed what I could into my backpack and waited for my taxi to take me to Victoria so I could get the bus to London Stansted, it's always a mish when flying a cheaper airline and this time was no different. I had fallen asleep on the backseat of the bus as there were only about 5 people occupying the bus when I got on. I woke up an hour into the journey with the whole bus full except for the 3 seats I was occupying. I finally got to Stansted and we were delayed 20 mins for boarding. By this time I had found Elie, our PP (Party Professionals) tour guide so at least I had someone to sit with on the plane. We didn't take off on time because the plane had to be de-iced so that was our second delay for the day. We actually landed in Munich not too long after our scheduled time, when we were approaching the airport the whole city was covered in snow, it looked so surreal! When we landed, we hit delay number 3 - the stairs had to be defrosted before we could exist the plane. Finally the angry, tired mob mosied on off the plane and into the baggage reclaim, where we waited a good half hour before our bags started coming and thus we had delay number 4. It was a little over 2 hours in a taxi before we made it to our destination - St Johann in Austrian Tirol. Such a picturesque town!
We settled in to our lovely little lodge with the caretaker, Helmet, allocating our rooms. I had landed one of the biggest rooms, sharing with 4 other girls. We looked around for a while, organised our ski hire and got ready for our welcome dinner. We went to a traditional Austrian restuarant in the centre of town, steins, pork and sauerkraut ... mmmm. It was just like Oktoberfest all over again!! We had scored ourselves a great group of people, 13 girls and 2 boys. We headed off pretty much straight after dinner to get some rest before our full day lesson of skiing/boarding the next day.
Breakfast was served at 8, we had fresh bread with cold cuts, pate and cheese, different but yummy. We got all kitted up and headed out to meet our cute little ski instructer, Chris. We were all pretty unco to start off but we seemed to get the hang of it relatively quickly ... until we headed up to chair lifts, Chris assured us that the chair lifts were easy-ish ... he was lying!! We ALL fell over coming off the chair lifts .. was a little steeper than Chris had let on. After the first day we were all well sore! So it was an early night for all of us.
Christmas morning!!! We were all meant to have a half day lesson but there 4 of us that just couldn't do it, my ski boots hurt so much that I couldn't walk, We got the chair lift up the mountain anyway to watch the lessons and take in the view before it was back to the lodge and get ready for our Christmas lunch. It was so lovely, there were about 100 of us in an Austrian hall, we had soup for entree, duck and veg for the main and apple strudel for our dessert. There was karaoke and a DJ, too many Jagermeisters and Flugerls but was a great night! We all headed off to Bunny's after the lunch and carried on until the early morning.
The next day we were all a bit shakey but headed up the mountain again for a few hours to practice our turning and stopping, had some lunch and called it a day. A few of us went up the gondola's to the very top of the mountain to check out the view, it was absolutely amazing!!! I was very queasy in the gondolas, being so afraid of heights I couldn't even look out the windows, I spent the whole trip, which was about 20 mins, looking at the floor. It was a pretty quiet night, headed to Huberbrau Brewery for some dinner (a big fat juicy pork knuckle) which was lovely!!
Up again for breakfast for what was my final day of skiing, we (me and Rachael, my ski buddy) made it down from the second chair lift to the first one, we were so proud of ourselves! We had lunch at one of the restaurants on the slopes, and attempted it again, I was in so much pain after falling from the chair lift ... AGAIN! and skiing down the hill in general. So we headed down after 2 runs and got ready for our fondue and bum boarding night. Fondue was very yummy and bum boarding was by far the best part of this trip!! It is absolutely nuts, the only way to stop yourself is to pull the bum board out from underneath you and roll down the snow, we were going uncontrollably fast down ridiculously steep slopes, screaming the whole way down, insane!!
For some reason I got violently ill that night and was in bed for the entire next day so not only did I miss out on my last day of skiing but I also missed our final dinner, farewell party and tobogganing .. very sad but I just couldn't move at all my stomach was churning too much and I couldn't stop vomiting ... eww!
Our final day came round way to quickly, I handed in my skis first thing and we just headed around town checking out all the shops. We had lunch at the Huberbrau brewery again and then enjoyed some Gluwein by the slopes before we got the taxi to Munich aiport and flew back to London.
I have put my photos and some videos up as well for you to have a look at :-)
4 days left in London, feels weird to be relocating again but am looking forward to a new adventure.
I hope you all have a wonderful NYE, we will just be bumming around London town, we will probably end up going to Trafalgar Square which will be interesting. I shall talk to you all when I am living in Dublin.
Much love! XOXOX
