Algonquin Provincial Park
The third largest and oldest Provincial Park in Canada created in 1893 and covering 7,635 sq km of forest, rivers and lakes. Offering a variety of experiences from backcountry wild camping and portage - over 2,000 km of canoe routes - to recreational camping, short hikes, art and theatre. There is over 140 km of marked backpacking trails as well as, one assumes, true off piste hiking.
My experience of Algonquin was limited to the beaver pond trail (only here for one day) the trail is a fantastic educational resource that demonstrates how beavers can manage the landscape to benefit a diverse range of species as well as meeting their own feeding and habitat needs. I a short 'stroll' of 2 km we see beaver meadow, forage lines, tree management, dam building and a complex lodge system.
The day was rounded off with a skyline view over the south eastern park of the Park - amazing!
